Everybody Hates Chris

Season 4 Episode 22

Everybody Hates G.E.D.

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM May 08, 2009 on The CW

  • Trivia

    • Near the end when Julius pulls up his truck, you can see the number '735', and the camera even zooms in on it 'revealing' Chris' G.E.D. score.

    • Rochelle asks Julius what kind of job Chris is supposed to get with a 10th-grade education. Doesn't Chris already work at Doc's?

    • The song that Chris, Rochelle, Tonya and Drew were singing to in the diner was Livin' On a Prayer by Bon Jovi.

    • We learn that the reason Caruso be picking on Chris is because he's jealous of his determination and achievement and has crushed his spirit only so he would not feel inferior.

    • The last line of the series was: What's it say spoken by Chris regarding his G.E.D results.

  • Quotes

    • Chris: Hey Ma, I heard they were hirin' at Red Lobster.
      Tonya: They're not hirin' you.
Drew: I wonder how hungry people have to be to eat a lobster? Like, who looks at that and says, "Man, that looks good?"

    • Ms. Morello: Just for the record, Chris, you can't afford to be late again. The clocks in this school are set to Eastern Standard Time, not CP Time.
Chris: What difference does it make if I'm late? We took all our tests. We only got, like, one more week to go.
Ms. Morello: Counting today, you have been late 29 times this year, and 30 is the limit. If you're late again, you will not be promoted. You will have to repeat the 10th grade.
      Chris: Say what?!
      Ms. Morello: Say word.
Narrator: Oh, there's a word I wanna say, all right!

    • Chris: (about his G.E.D results) What's it say?

    • Julius: Most people don't get to finish the 10th grade once. You get to do it twice. It's kinda like workin' a double shift.
Chris: Do you know how embarrassing that's gonna be?
Rochelle: As embarrassing as bein' 40 and still livin' with your mother 'cause you were too stupid to listen to her and repeat the 10th grade and get your diploma.

  • Notes

    • Chris Rock's actual father, Julius Rock (the inspiration for the show's character) died from peptic ulcer disease in 1988, which is a year ahead from the time where this episode takes place in 1987. So it can be presumed that the series was intended to end before the time Julius's death would have taken place.

    • All cast members appeared in every episode.

  • Allusions

    • The Sopranos
The final scene of this episode ends in a similar, abrupt way as the HBO series that ran from 1999-2007.
