Greg: Ms. Morello went on a trip to Africa to help fight off an outbreak of yellow fever. Chris: (narrating) More like she went to Harlem to fight off an outbreak of jungle fever. (Ms. Morello is then seen dancing with some black guys)
Chris: Man, I can't believe this. The guy's gonna kill me. It's not like I didn't have it bad enough comin' to this school from the other side of town, havin' the kids kick the crap outta me, but now the teacher's gonna kick the crap outta me too. Caruso: Quit complaining, Kareem. I love this guy. I didn't like him at first because of the whole black thing, but I'm doing better at math now. And the things he taught me about jazz, forget about it.
Rochelle: I'm raisin' men in this house, and men do not hit women. Chris: (narrating) That meant you couldn't hit a girl even if you were supposed to hit her. (Drew is in a boxing match with a female boxer; he tries to punch her) Rochelle: You better not hit that girl! (the female boxer punches Drew, knocking him out)
Chris Rock (narration): Back at home, Drew was trying to watch hockey and wishing Tonya would just shut the puck up.
Chris: Are you serious? Mr. Newton: As a catastrophic cardiac infarction. Chris Rock (narration): Quit showing off, just say heart attack!
Mr. Newton: Starting tomorrow, we're going to put some brains inside that head of yours. Chris Rock (narration): And I'm gonna put a brick upside that head of yours!
Substitute Teacher: It's algebra, the math of the unknown. Chris: Then I must be doing great, 'cause I don't know it.
This episode was nominated for a Image Award for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.
Music in tonight's episode: The song that plays at the beginning of the episode is "Another Bites The Dust" by Queen. The last song played is "Don't Get Me Wrong" by the Pretenders.
The scene where the substitute teacher makes Chris practice math in the yard and hoses him with water is from "An Officer and a Gentleman" (Richard Gere and Louis Gossett Jr.), even matching the dialogue.
Caruso: (to Chris) Hey Ebony. (to Greg) Ivory. This is a reference to Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder's song, "Ebony and Ivory." This is the same song that plays the first time Caruso beats Chris up in the pilot episode.
The "Vitruvian Man" that Mr. Newton sketches on the blackboard is based on a drawing by Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
Substitute Teacher: To be or not to be, that is the question. Chris Rock mentions in his narration that this substitute is really an out-of-work actor. The teacher's line is from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
One of the substitute teachers, who is dressed like a dancer (including the 80s style legwarmers) was posed in a chair and waiting for someone to splash water on her. This is a recreation of a famous scene from the movie Flashdance (1983) where water is splashed on an exotic dancer performing at a club. The sub was even posed like the dancer in the movie.
