  • What could've been a decently funny premise is ruined by character action that makes no sense.

    6.2
The jokes are there, and even in this early episode the cast has meshed nicely, so why is this episode "off"?

Debra comes down with a flu on the same day Ray has an important meeting with Terry Bradshaw to discuss his helping to write a biography. The kids also get sick and Ray is forced into taking them to the pediatrician and trying to shoehorn in his talk with Terry at the same time, as Debra insists he has to help out with the kids.

This is where the episode falls apart. That Debra couldn't suck it up and deal with the kids, even dealing with Marie's help, so that Ray could go to a potentially lucrative meeting, for what was essentially a job interview, is just ridiculous. His whole affair is treated like a fun time instead of the serious business it really was.

While the episode tries to mine this for a typical "life gets in the way of things sometimes" plot, the fact that the thing gotten in the way of was a potential job just makes the whole thing ring very untrue.moreless

    • Ray: We're back. The doctor was so amazed on how identical the kids are. I bet that when we have to do an X-ray it's enough to bring just one of them.

    • Ray: Hey! You're up! Okay. Now you're feeling better!
Debra: No. I just started to worry because you were down here unsupervised.

    • Debra: What's the matter with Ally?
Ray: All I did was give her breakfast! That's all I did. Then the next minute, she's burning up. She's like you, Deb, she's sick.
      Debra: Aww, honey, come here.
      Ray: Okay.
      Debra: Not you! Ally!

    • Ray: Mommy's not feeling too good.
Ally: What did you do to her?

    • Ray: Hey, the kids aren't in bed with us for a change. What do you say we—
Debra: Oh, God, I don't feel so well.
Ray: You usually don't say that until after.
Debra: No, Ray, I mean it. Stay away from me. Oh, God, I'm so hot.
Ray: You know, you're sending me all these mixed signals!

    • Marie: What I don't understand is how the kids got so sick in the first place. You do put coats on them, don't you?
Debra: No, Marie, I send them straight out from the tub, buck naked!

    • (The doctor is looking in Ally's ear, and she's crying)
Ray: Okay, doctor's making me do this. This is the doctor's fault, okay? Daddy is still a great man.

    • Marie: (talking about Debra) See? You see what you're doing to her?!? Shh! Go, go, go, go she needs her rest!
Frank: She should be up and moving around. She should walk it off!

    • Ray: And Ally's favorite video, The Little Mermaid.
Ally: No, Beauty and the Beast!
Ray: Right... (to the doctor) It's the same thing.
