  • Jealous Robert

    8.0
There were no quotable lines here. The cold opening was not hilarious, the end sequence was not particularly spectacular. Simply put, there was nothing overly memorable about this episode.

But it was still really good. From top to bottom this episode (that focused on the struggles of Robert) had the viewer on the edge of their seat, biting at every twist and turn the writers threw our way. And then at the end, even the biggest Brad Garrett haters, felt for Robert, who saw his chances of romance disappear before his eyes. We all knew it was not the end with Amy, but just for a second we were connected with him in a special way that only the Barones could do.moreless
  • Marie at her manipulative best.

    9.5
Of the 209 individual episodes of ELR, this is one of the 44 that I believe have put this show into a category of its own.

Desperate to get Robert and Amy back together again, Debra and Marie conspire to make Robert jealous by arranging for Amy to go out with Gianni. After all, this trick worked for Marie when she made dinner for Chuck Peckarella before marrying Frank, who got so jealous he put his fist through Peckarella’s headlight. Raymond uncovers the plot and is horrified by the idea of tampering with people’s lives, condemning it as voodoo.

The plot backfires when it looks like Amy and Gianni are hitting it off. When they come by to go on a double date with Ray and Debra, Robert bursts in on the pretense of a gas leak, thanks to a phone call from Marie (“Don’t any of you smell it?”). After an ugly confrontation, Amy and Gianni leave a dejected Robert to be comforted by Marie and Debra while Ray desperately tries to tell Robert of the scheme the two had cooked up. Efforts to keep Ray quiet include an elbow to the groin that causes him to faint from the pain to the total indifference of the others. Ray finally blurts out the secret, causing Robert to leave in disgust.

When Chuck Peckarella’s name comes up in Frank’s presence he says, “I’m serving his life sentence!” hinting that manipulating events might not be such a good idea after all. While both Marie and Debra are in on this plan, this episode is a classic display of Marie’s mastery of the art of manipulating people. The scenes where she reveals her role in the plot while cooking eggs and tries to demean Gianni to Amy are among her manipulative best.moreless
