  • Just a formality

Everybody Loves Raymond is widely regarded as one of the best sitcoms of our generation, but sometimes the episodes are just not that funny. The overacting can be a bit much at times, but when you introduce a family that is full of overactors you are just setting yourself up for trouble.

Fred Willard and Chris Elliott were great recurring guest additions, but they could only help so much. The fact is that ELR peaked very early in its run and the humor just progressed too much to a character-based style that the jokes were not even jokes by the end.moreless
  • Will Robert finally have the chance at the happiness he so desperately wants, and have a loving and lasting marriage?

Raymond is all excited at the chance of golfing with his brother, when Robert tells him the big news: he wants to propose to his girlfriend, Amy. Using Raymond as an excuse, Robert drives to Pennslyvania, to ask Roberts parents for her hand in marriage. When they say no, he is heartbroken and goes to his brother for help. Will the combined powers of Raymond and Robert be enough to convince Amy's Jesus loving family that he is the right one for their daughter? Will Amy say yes? What is up with Amy's weird brother? Is Robert being happy even possible in this show?moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • In this episode, Policeman #2 is played by Ray Romano's brother, Richard. He is an actual NYC policeman and the basis of the character "Robert Barone".

    • In this episode, Chris Elliott appeared as Amy's brother Peter who supposedly remembers Ray coming to his comic book shop. In the episode "Hackidu", it was Paul Reubens who played Amy's brother Russell that ran the comic book shop. This episode does not attempt to explain what happened to Russell, so we are led to think that Peter is the brother that we had met in the past. (Fortunately, especially thanks to syndication, we know better).

  • QUOTES (13)

    • Robert: (hands Amy ring after proposing to her minutes earlier) Don't you want to put this on?
Amy: Oh, it's beautiful! I just love you so much! (they kiss) I'm getting married! To you! I'm getting married to you! There's going to be a wedding, and I'm going to be the bride! Thank you for marrying me!
Robert: My pleasure. (they kiss again)

    • Robert (to Amy about how it went asking her parents for her hand in marriage): They said no.
      Amy: What?
Robert: They said no. They don't approve of me, of my past.
      Amy: But I don't understand.
Robert: They love you very much, Amy. They want what's best for you.
Amy: But...wait, wait a minute, I want to get married! Don't worry, Robert. We can fix this. I know we can! My parents will learn to love you the way your parents love you!

    • Robert: Amy, will you marry me?
      Amy: Huh?
Robert: I love you, Amy. Will you marry me?
Amy: But Robert, we never even talked about—what's happening?
Robert: I'm ready to be happy.
      Amy: I am, too.

    • Ray: (to Pat) Hey, if anything, Robert was scared to touch your daughter. She was the one who wanted it!

    • Marie: (to Robert) I found a place that can do your tuxedo. They do the circus.

    • (Points at Jesus)
Raymond: Isn't that the guy who sells tye-die shirts at the beach. I'm joking, he's great. I have his book.

    • Cop: Amy McDougal, you have the right to remain single. Anything you do or say can be used against you in a church of God. If you don't have a husband, one will be provided for you.
      Amy: Huh?
      Cop: She doesn't get it.

    • Raymond: So are we gonna hit a bucket of balls or what?
Robert: No, this is all just a diversion to throw her off. I'm going to ask her parents right now.
Raymond: What?! But I'm all horny for golf.

    • Amy's Mom: Hello Robert. What brings you to Pennsylvania?
      Robert: My car.

    • Debra: You listen to me Robert. This is between you and Amy. Her parents
are just going to have to get used to the idea. But it's your life. You do what you want to do.
Ray: Until you get married. Then you do what she wants to do.

    • Marie: (to Robert) You know that you're killing me, Robby. Do you even care that you're killing me?
      Robert: Ma ...
Marie: Dig a grave and throw me in.
      Frank: I've got a shovel.

    • Debra: Who cares about her family?
Marie: Excuse me. When you marry a person, you also marry the family.
      Debra: I've heard.

    • Robert: (to Amy's parents) I would like to formally request ... your daughter's hand in marraige.
(Amy's parents look at each other, smiling, as if silently consulting one another)
      Hank: No.
