  • Debra’s divorced dad gets a new girlfriend, but she’s no girl.

    9.2
In a refreshing twist on an old, old story, the Barones are faced with the awkwardness of a Thanksgiving dinner where Debra’s divorced mom (Lois) and dad (Warren) are coming, and Warren is bringing his new woman friend. Of course, everyone expects the new friend to be some “young floozy” Warren has found, with Debra and Marie especially contemptuous of the idea of older men dating younger women (as was also plainly evident in the episode “Young Girl” when Robert dated a young woman who turned out to be nineteen). You can imagine everyone’s surprise when Warren shows up with Emma, a gray-haired co-worker who is actually older than Warren.

Once Emma has gone upstairs for her nap, the age gags flow freely, especially from Frank. But it is Raymond who crosses the line with the offhand comment that Warren did not want someone younger, just someone different. This is deeply hurtful to Lois who decides to go for a walk. Debra and Marie quickly rally and join her, soon to come back furious, confronting Ray and Frank for their typical male insensitivity.

As a story line, the situation is pretty much exhausted before the episode is over, but any possible void is amply filled by reminiscences of Claudia, the 200-pound cleaning lady Ray and Debra used back when Deb was pregnant. Deb accuses Ray of looking at Claudia in an impure way as an example of how crude and thoughtless men are. This leads Frank to tell his story of how “I had my chance with Claudia.” He tells a wonderful story of how, alone in Deb and Ray’s apartment with Claudia, Frank is offered some iced tea in a way that seems suggestive of something else, but he declines with “just the tea.” This noble show of restraint wins points with Marie but Ray doesn’t get off the hook until he apologizes to Lois and calls her “mom,” which pleases Deb but not so much Marie.

“Older Women” is a great episode that deals with the issues of age, sensitivity and loyalty with cleverness and humor that make it one of the best of the Barone Thanksgivings.

Note: The trials and tribulations of calling one’s mother-in-law “mom” would be fully developed and put to rest twelve episodes later with “Call Me Mom.”moreless
  • Debra\'s dad warren brings his wife and girlfriend to thanksgiving dinner, trouble ensues.

    8.5
Debra\\\'s freshly divorced parents are coming for thanksgiving dinner. Debra is very happy they are coming until debra\\\'s dad ( warren) shows up with a really old lady and lois (debra\\\'s mom.).

Everybody seems shocked and pissed at debra\\\'s dad except for Lois.(even though (emma) the girlfriend is very fun and nice.

Ray starts making stupid comments about the girlfriend and finally lois leaves the table nearly in tears, mumbling that she\\\'s going outside for fresh air Debra gives ray a really dirty look and shockingly marie tells ray off and joins debra and lois.

Later on , when debra and marie get back , frank, ray, robert and and debra\\\'s dad are having a discussion about Emma( the older girlfriend) and what debra\\\'s dad sees in her.

Debra comes backs, still pretty upset and puts in her own two sense and says that Ray used to ogle the 350 lb. cleaning lady she had come over when ally was born and she doesn\\\'t think it matters how a women looks, just as long as they give the men attention.

Ray interjects and says he was so not looking at her like that.

Robert says he can understand why warren would date emma.

She seems very sweet and lively.

Frank says he had feelings for claudia because she gave him juice and talked nicely to him.

Marie says she feels bad for debra's mom that her marriage ended after so many years and then warren flaunts this new women in her face.

It end with robert staring at her like she\\\'s hot or something.moreless
