Episode Summary

EDIT
The Barones attend an open house Michael and Geoffrey's school, during which the kids all read stories that they've written themselves. Most of the students tell tall tales that are obviously fictional, but Michael's story, "The Angry Family", feels all too factual to the family.

I love Debra's line: when i got married i didn't just get a husband i got a whole freak show that set up their tent right across the street and that would be fine if they stayed there but everyday, everyday! they dump a truckload of their drec into my lap. how would you like to sit through two people in their sixties fighting over who invented the lawn...the lawn! and the brother! i live in an apartment i dont even have a lawn raymond has a lawn but you can't blame him when you see who the mother is, she has this kind of sick hold on the both of them and the father is as disgusting a creature god has ever dropped on this planet. so no wonder the kid writes stories i should be writing stories my life is a gothic novel and until you have lived in that house with all of them in there day after day week after week year after friggin year you are in no position to judge me!moreless

    8.0
after one of the twins writes a story called The Angry Family, the Barones think it is about them, and so they go to a family counseling. but, at the end of the episode, it is revealed the angry family is a show on TV that the twins enjoy watching.

Overall, not perfect, the ending is kind of lame I think, and some parts were kind of boring. Not one of my favorites of the series, it was alright though, this episode gets a low B- from me. It is OK, but i would not say it was stupendous or anythingmoreless
  • Frank hits the nail on the head

    8.2
Jeffrey , Ray Debra's little boy drew a picture book at school of his family. In it he talks about how Frank and Marie cause alot of drama and marital problems for his parents and he wishes it would stop. The teacher and the headmaster of the school are so stunned about the content of Jeffrey's litle book, that the teach amkes an emergency appointment to speak with Ray and Debra. The Teacher begins to shift all of the blame on Debra. Debra finally utters these immortal lines "Eileen, you have no idea what I have to put up with. When I got married, I didn't just get a husband. I got a whole freak show that set up their tent right across the street. And that would be fine if they stayed there, but everyday, every day, they dump a truckload of their insane family dreck into my lap. How would you like to sit through 2 people in their 60's fighting over who invented the lawn? The LAWN! And then the brother, "I live in an apartment. I don't even have a lawn. Raymond has a lawn." But you can't blame him when you see who the mother is. She has this kind of sick hold on the both of them. And the father is about as disgusting a creature as God has ever dropped on this planet. So no wonder the kid writes stories. I should be writing stories. My life is a gothic novel, and until you have lived in that house with all of them in there with you, day after day, week after, year after friggin' year, you are in no place to judge me!!!"(the look on the teacher's face is sidesplitting. this causes the headmaster to haul the whole family in for family counseling.

During this meeting, Robert blames ray, Marie blames Debra,

and Frank and Marie star fighting over her invented the lawn .... again.Ray sits there and tries to pretend nothing is happening.Debra looks she is gonna have a nervous breakdown, poor thing. The the headmaster asks frank what he thinks and Franks opens his mouth and says, you wanna know the real problem, and he points at Debra, and says (MARIE)is mad because ray married Debra and can't let anyone live that down. After this the priest says that instead of pointing the finger they should read the book and realize how much the yelling affects the kids.

I think this a sad episode. I dunno if adults how much fighting daily does to the pyshce of any person. And i hate how everyone say debra is a mean spiteful witch She yells alot , but she has alot on her plate, and the fact that she hasn't left yet suprises me(Ray would totally fall apart if she left). And Ray really needs a kick in the pants once in a while, since his mother spoiled him so much.I like that she is a housewife and she is active at the kid's school.moreless
  • "I didn't just get a husband, I got an entire freak show that set up their tent right across the street!"

    9.5
What a memorable episode this is! It has some of the best scenes and rants in the entire series. Michael reads "The Angry Family" to the Barones and they are alarmed at how he views his family. To make things worse, Debra makes the hisotric rant to Michael's teacher about how it's all Frank and Marie's fault that everybody is angry. The family goes to therapy and eventually see why Michael wrote the story. Ray and Debra try to improve upon family life and at the very end, we learn that Michael still views the family as a bunch of angry nut-jobs by saying "I like that show because the monsters are always yelling at each other." You have to see the episode to get its full effect, it's not enough to use words.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • When Ray and Debra go in for the conference with the twins' teacher, you can totally tell that it's the same room used two years ago, in Season 4's "Left Back." For that matter, it seems that the same sets were used for all the kids' classroom scenes throughout the series. For instance, it was Ally's fifth grade classroom in Season 7's "Homework," and her seventh grade room in Season 9's "Ally's F."

    • After the family returns home after the open house, the kids are seen running into the house first through the kitchen before the adults enter. If you watch closely, you will see one of the twins trip and fall as he is running into the living room.

    • The timing of this episode is way off. In season 4 episode "Left Back," Ray and Debra decide to leave Michael and Geoffrey in pre-school one more year. This would mean that they were in preschool again in season 5 and in kindergarten during season 6. However, it's a first grade open house.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Debra: The stories were supposed to be a surprise for the parents.
Ray: I think a surprise is like, you get to the school and there's an open bar. This was more like an ambush.

    • Robert: I wasn't even mentioned in that book.
Ray: You're insulted that you weren't insulted?
Robert: I'm insulted that you've brainwashed your children into thinking that the only thing I'm good at is to hold up a piñata.

    • Robert: I'm gonna write my own book.
Ray: (Kicking Robert out of the house) Get out.
      Robert: That's the title.

    • Debra: I'm pretty sure that most of the leading characters in that story were from the Barone side.
Ray: Yeah, okay. But the loud part I'm thinking is probably you.
Debra: So you're blaming me? You are completely free and clear?
Ray: I'm sorry, but I am not the yeller.
Debra: YOU ARE THE REASON FOR THE YELLER!

    • Marie: I've never gotten looks like that in my life!
Frank: You oughta look at me more.

    • Debra: Hey, listen, Michael. We really loved your story, and we learned a lot from it.
Michael: Yeah, I like that cartoon.
      Debra: What cartoon?
Michael: The Monster Maniacs. They're really funny. They're always yelling.

    • Michael: (reading his essay) The daddy was mad at the mommy. The mommy was mad at the daddy. The mommy and daddy were very mad at the grandpa...and the grandma got mad at everybody.
      Marie: I did not!

    • Debra: (talking to the twins' teacher) Eileen, you have no idea what I have to put up with. My life is a gothic novel, and until you have lived in that house with all of them in there with you, day after day, week after, year after friggin' year, you are in no position to judge me!
