Episode Summary

EDIT
Tempers flare when Marie accuses Debra of not returning a borrowed canister that holds sentimental value, while Debra insists that she has already given it back. Debra is then horrified to discover that she does still have the canister in her possession, and with Ray and Robert's reluctant assistance, concocts an elaborate scheme to get rid of the evidence, rather than admit to Marie that she was right all along.moreless

  • This was one of my favorite seasons of the series, and The Canister is definitely one of my top episodes!

    9.5
Frank saves Debra from Marie? Frank saves Debra from Marie! How sweet and surprising was that twist?! I love when Peter Boyle is given plotlines where he can show off the sweeter side of Frank. I totally thought that he would give her up for all of her shenanigans behind Marie's back, but he really stepped it up as her father-in-law. I was really overjoyed.

But this moment was only a couple of minutes long. The main plotline, which involved the children in the best of ways, which is not always the case, was very humorous. Ally discovered Marie's missing canister, and then the twins accidentally knocked it down the stairs, creating a hilarious back-from-the-dead effect for the shocked parents. It was great episode in a great season!moreless
  • Marie asks Debra for a canister that Debra insists she already returned. Hilarity ensues when Debra locates the canister and enlists Robert and Raymond to help her cover her tracks.

    9.0
Great episode! I love the dynamic between Debra and Marie so an episode that centers around conflict between them is always hilarious. Everyone can relate to the reluctance to admit a mistake and even more so when dealing with someone like Marie! One of the great things about "Everybody Loves Raymond" is the ability to have an entire episode revolve around something as simple as a misplaced canister, but this show is able to do entire episodes like this while still keeping it fresh and funny. Overall, this is just a classic example of a great episode for me!moreless
  • This episode was way too funny!

    9.6
Just when Debra thought the canister issue with Marie was over, it shows up right in front of her all of a sudden. Even after she disposes of Marie's precious artifact, it shows up again (it must be a sign). The only thing to do now is sneak it back into the house across the street, but that proves to be very difficult. Ray and Robert even had to hug each other for an extended period of time just to keep Marie from seeing it. There are too many awesome moments in this episode and many unexpected twists such as Marie apologizing to Debra, the canister mysteriously showing up again, and the brother hugging each other. This is probably my favorite episode in Season 5.moreless

    • How is it that the canister didn't get the least bit bent up when Debra was stuffing it in the garbage can and jumping up and down on top of it to make it stay in the garbage?

  • QUOTES (11)

    • Marie: My canister! Where did you get that, Frank?
Frank: I, um.....I hid it from you. I thought it would be funny.
      Marie: What?
Frank: Yeah, I was using it to keep my nuts and bolts in, and when I heard you going on and on about the stupid thing, I hid it. Pretty funny, huh?
Marie: Funny?!? Frank, I love that canister! I've been running around like a madwoman looking for that!
      Frank: All funny.
Marie: No, Frank. You want to know what's funny? This marriage!

    • Debra: (after Marie apologizes for thinking Debra had the canister) You know what? I give her a lot of credit, because that was hard for her to do, but she did it, and she meant it. Hmm. You know what I think? Yeah. I think I finally got through to her. I mean, now she sees that she's not always right.
Ally: (walks in with the canister) Is this what Grandma was looking for?
      Debra: AHHHHH!
      Robert: Oh my Goooood!

    • Marie: Frank, come look.
      Frank: What?
      Marie: Your sons are hugging.
Frank: You want me to get the hose?

    • Frank: Hey, is that Marie's canister? (Debra runs away) Wait a minute! It is Marie's canister! She's been going on about that thing like it's King Tut's golden undies!

    • Debra: Frank, you've got to help me! What should I do?
Frank: Give your heart to God, because your ass is Marie's!

    • Debra: Boys, where did you get that canister?
      Twins: In the garbage.
Ray: You've got to feed them more!!

    • Robert: Wow, the Marie Barone Apology. Until today, I'd only heard about it!
Ray: And to Debra! Boy. There's your Easter miracle!

    • Ray: Look Deb, this must be a sign or something, I mean we try to get rid of this thing and it comes back. It's like a horror movie where at the end you think it's over, but then THE HAND POPS OUT OF THE GRAVE!

    • Ray: Look, there's a way to fix this, but you have to grow a mustache.

    • Ray: Get off me! Why did you kiss me?
Robert: I was in the moment.

    • Debra: What about you Ray, are you with me?
Ray: Devil, thy name is women!
