Episode Summary

One Small Step (The Fall of the Neosapien Empire 1)
ExoFleet jumptroops and e-frames land on the moon in an attempt to retake it from the Neo sapiens. But when Phaeton sends nearly every e-frame on Earth after the fleet itself, the e-frames invading the moon are recalled. DeLeon receives permission from Marsh to stay on the moon with the jumptroops to help them. Battles rage both on the moon and above it. DeLeon and O'Reilly battle Typhonus and kill him, but Alec is mortally wounded in the process. Before he dies he has O'Reilly help him use the black box from Typhonus' e-frame to appear to be Typhonus in a transmission to Phaeton, in which he tells him the Neo pilots are either surrendering or retreating. As punishment for such betrayal, Phaeton activates the self-destruct mechanism on all the Neo e-frames. The combination of this and Alec, as Typhonus, telling the Neo troops on the moon to surrender ends the battle. Afterwards, with Alec DeLeon dead, O'Reilly delivers DeLeon's e-frame black box to Maggie Weston.moreless

  • THIS is why I love this series!

Right now, I can't find the words to describe how awesome this series is.

This is another one of the pivotal emotional moments in the series. With all the losses the other squadrons seem to suffer, JT has always seemed to be the lucky one holding on to the very same squad he's had since the beginning of the war suffering very few casualties... until now. With the loss of Alice Noretti and now his best friend DeLeon, the war weighs heavy on JT's shoulders as it does on his squad. Alec, unlike Alice, was an established character and a valued friend amongst them all. It's even more tragic that he and Weston were unable to express their true feelings for each other before the end. But at least it was a lesson learned for JT Marsh and Colleen O'Reilly as DeLeon hinted to Colleen not to make the same mistake.

This is a real tear jerker of an episode.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • The inscription on Phaeton's bunker entrance is from Dante's Divine Comedy and its written in Italian. It means, "abandon all hope, ye who enter here." In Dante's Divine Comedy, it is the inscription on the gateway entrance to hell.

    • Typhonus refers to the moon as "a dagger pointing at the Earth." This is a common saying. Japan was said to refer to Korea as a dagger pointing at the heart of Japan before invading them in the late 18th century.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Cpt. Butler: Butler to Pellegrino, hold your fire! The neos are surrendering!
Pellegrino: Guess somebody forgot to tell them they were winning!

    • Simbacca: These neos are fighting like pirates! Funny, I could almost respect them.

    • Cdr. Marsh: Looks like you'll have to take this one alone captain.
Cpt. Butler: Without your e-frames, we might as well hang targets on our backs!
Cdr. Marsh: Sorry captain, but I've got my orders.
DeLeon: JT, one more e-frame may not make a difference up there, but it might for the captain. Let me go with him.
(Maggie looks concerned in the background)
Cdr. Marsh: Alright Alec, but take care.
      DeLeon: Always JT.
Weston: Hey, don't get cocky Alec.
DeLeon: Why Weston, I didn't know you cared.
      Weston: In your dreams DeLeon.
      Cpt. Butler: Lets go flyboy!

    • DeLeon: I've been meaning to thank you for rescuing all that artwork while on Earth.
Bronsky: Yes well thats why they pay me the big bucks.
DeLeon: It'd be a tragedy to lose all that beauty, just because Phaeton doesn't have an eye for the...(looks over at Maggie) finer things in life.

    • DeLeon: Are you okay Maggie?
      Weston: Yeah, I hate surprises.
      DeLeon: Well be careful ok?
Weston: Why mister DeLeon, I didn't know you cared.

    • (Phaeton's speech in the background during the battle of the moon)
Phaeton: Of all the creatures who have occupied the Earth, it is we, neosapiens, who have proved most fit to rule. The door to our future is opening, and beyond that door lies the road to greatness! Life, is a journey. Every action we take, every decision we make, large or small, is a step on that journey! Only when we take the last step is the final destination revealed. But YOU have chosen your future! You will not take your final step in darkness but in the brilliant flash of ULTIMATE sacrifice! As your enemies tremble before you, you will know that your journey WAS NOT MADE IN VEIN!!!

    • (fighting on Tranquility base on the moon)
Pellegrino: Tranquility base huh? Don't seem so tranquil to me.

    • Adm. Winfield: You'd think after all my years with the exo-fleet, I wouldn't feel anything sending soldiers into combat... but I do. I'd still rather risk my own life than order other soldiers to risk theirs.
Simbacca: And thats why they're willing to follow your orders.

  • NOTES (1)

    • Weston's last words to DeLeon were, "In your dreams DeLeon" without knowing it would be the last thing she ever says to him. She regrets this later on when she says that she didn't get a chance to tell him how she truly felt about him.
