Episode Summary

Becoming the Story
Mark Fainaru-Wada, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, was covering the raid on a local lab owned by the Bay Area Lab Cooperative (BALCO) when he received a tip that steroids and prominent athletes were involved. With fellow journalist Lance Williams, the two investigated further and finally received revealing transcripts of grand jury testimony from a confidential source. This prompted a federal investigation into the leak of grand jury statements. The two reporters were subpoenaed and ordered to identify their sources, but refused citing First Amendment protection. Held in contempt of court, they faced a prison sentence longer than the convicted drug suppliers in the BALCO case.moreless
