Production Supervisor/Coordinator Shannon Muir points out:
Sphinx" is actually production number 102, the first script that came in after the "Darkness at Noon" pilot. But for a variety of reasons it was the last to be finished, and in some markets the last to be aired. (I know for a fact it was the last one aired in Los Angeles, but many other markets report the last episode to be "Witchy Women" which I've always found interesting). It was originally intended to immediately follow "Darkness at Noon," but in the end that honor went to "Fear Itself" (production number 103).
In the pictures Egon shows the pizza delivery guy, we see Tempus (from "Ghost Apocalyptic Future").
Ray gets a mention in this episode when Egon calls Garrett Ray by mistake.
This is set before "Back In The Saddle" because Egon is 39 at that point.
The Riddle of the Sphinx dates back to the 5th century when Sophocles wrote the Three Theban Plays. In the First Play "Oedipus The King" Oedipus comes across the Sphinx and answers the riddle, earning him the right to rule Thebes.
The sphinx was featured in greek mythology, and the same riddle it spoke then appears in the episode.
