  • Another one of the all-time greatest episodes of the show. This one is from the season of "Heroes".

In the seven seasons of the show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has made some pretty superlative episodes. But, in my opinion, the Akers Family episode, the second episode of the sixth season, otherwise known as the season of "Heroes", pretty much tops them all. Now, this family, which resides in West Chester, Ohio, is pretty much like your average family from the good old Buckeye State, except that out of the five members of the family, all but one has a potentially life threatening illness. Two members (the father and the son) have Crohn's Disease, a genetic condition that causes severe stomach pain. But that's nothing compared with the other two. The two daughters both have Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA, which is a progressive condition that weakens the muscles in the body to the point where you can't handle your own weight. Only 25,000 people worldwide have this disease and the worst part is that there is no cure. They are both thus confined to wheelchairs. However, their middle child, 8 year old Brooke Akers, the hero of this episode, despite being confined to a 200-pound wheelchair, is a cheerleader at many sporting events throughout West Chester. She is greatly loved by the community for her optimism and courage in the face of danger, as well as for her loving, caring nature. Not to mention she's in my opinion, one of the cutest little 8 year old girls you will ever meet. In fact, when Ty asked her what she is afraid of, the first things she said is that she was worried about her sister having an asthma attack or her brother having a flare-up. Ty later said that there were people that one meets in life that change them as a human being, and he thought that young Brooke was one of those people. And he's right. Despite the fact that she's had to deal with more pain and more things that most people go through in their whole life, she does not worry much about herself but instead worries about everyone else in her family. And again, I state, that she is only EIGHT YEARS OLD. That is true heroism, and she really deserved to be rewarded for it. So as they were building the new house, Ty decided to make Brooke's bedroom his secret project for that week, and if you were to ask me I'd say he made the right decision hands down. All of the "secret projects" made during the course of the show are lovely to look at, and this one is particularly beautiful, all ornate and detailed, even having a chandelier on the ceiling. This episode in general was fantastic. Like all episodes, it had its funny moments, like during demolition, they were doing it like a regular cheerleader routine. D for 'Dozer. E for Excavator, M for Mulcher, with each of those machines plowing through homemade banners with those letters. But when they reached O, instead of a machine plowing through and much to Ty's surprise, Ed came running through the banner holding a toilet seat high over his head, calling it "the O". And his reason for doing that hilarious stunt: "There's no machinery that begins with O". And in a later scene, when Michael went to Sears to shop for the house, he tried out the Sears test kitchen, and with one recipe, he had turned it from a neat little kitchen to a disaster zone with hilarious frequency. And what made it even funnier, is that right before they showed how messy it was, he said in a side interview, "A clean kitchen is a happy kitchen" (Yeah, right!). And the family itself was by far one of, if not the, most deserving family in the history of the show. I would rank the Akers Family episode, along with the Thibodeau Family episode from season four, as the all time best episode of the series. Highly recommended. 10/10 (A+).moreless
  • This is my review of the "Akers Family" episode.

The bottom line of this episode is that it is one of the best that has been made. In that episode, the design team helps out a family of which 4 out of 5 members have life-threatening illnesses. The middle child, their 8-year-old daughter is truly the hero of the episode. She is a cheerleader despite the fact that she has SMA and thus is confined to a wheelchair. And that's not even the half of it. Despite going through more pain and more suffering than any eight year old girl should have to bear, she doesn;t worry about what she is going through. In fact, she worries more about what everyone else in her family is going through. Now that is a true act of heroism, and it perfectly intermixes with the plot. Overall, this is one of my all-time favoite episodes of the show, so I'd give it a perfect 10 out of 10.moreless

Probably a great show and that these family members deserved a house. Four of the five members have physical diseases. And that they do their best not to let that get them down. They have a spirit that is really awesome. Wish more people were like that. They are fortunte to have one another. As the team comes to visit them and build them a house. Two of them have crohn's disease. Another has something like MDA. And one of them, an eight-year old that has a wheelchair. But it well wise beyond her years. This is one of those feel good stories you should watch!moreless
