  • One of the all-time greatest episodes of the show

The Thibodeau Family episode is without a doubt a series classic and one of the many heartwarming episodes from the great fourth season. Now, the Thibodeaus of Brookings County, South Dakota make up your typical family from the good old Mount Rushmore state. They have a nice spot out in the countryside and like many couples these days, both of the parents work part time jobs to make sure the family has enough to live on. But it has not been easy, because their oldest child, 12 year old Siehera Thibodeau, has a lot of (and I do mean a lot of) health problems. For one she ended up being born with a huge hole in her heart, and because of this defect, she has had to have four open-heart surgeries to fix this. After surgery number four she had suffered some complication when her kidneys went into failure and both of her lungs collapsed, turning what should have been a 10-day stay in the hospital into a four week stay. Another problem she has is with her breathing. She actually sometimes stopped breathing particularly at night, and she had actually stopped breathing at least once every night for three straight weeks. With her frail body, Siehera needed a lot of warmth and comfort to fully recover at her house. Unfortunantly, their old house needed massive improvements and it has deteriorated so much that the family was down to using a portable space heater to heat the house, and given the fact that one of South Dakota's infamous harsh winters, Siehera would have been very susceptible to infection. Something as simple as a minor cold could have put her back into the hospital or worse could have killed her. Luckily for them, the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition design team got their application video and they were chosen as the lucky family that would recieve a complete home makeover. The team got there just in the nick of time. The family would be sent on vacation to New York City while Ty and the rest of the team completely redid their house. One of the more poignant parts was the scene with with "The Scrapbook", which has many pictures of Siehera in the hospital, either before or after her surgeries. Another very important scene, and definently my favorite part, is the scene where Siehera shows to Ty one of the songs she wrote. She actually sang her song while Ty played the music for the television audience. The song holds the exact truth about what she has been going through over the last few years. Another thing that makes the song worth listening to, is the fact that she has a great singing voice. It just blew me away. As far as the rest of the episode goes, the demolition as always was creative, with the family actually seeing it live at TRL (yes, Total Request Live). That part was cool. And as always, there are a lot of heartwarming and emotional parts. One perfect example of this was the scene where one little boy despite not knowing the family, gives his last 13 dollars to help them out, and when one of the designers read his letter explaining how he wants to help, they both get teary-eyed. Another one was when another designer shows one of the female contractor, who has kids of her own, the air purifier that will keep the house a clean and healthy house for Siehera, she says that it's the most beautiful thing in the world and she gets emotional. Then of course, there is the reveal of the Thibodeau Family's brand new house. Everyone did an awesome job building it. The best part was Ty's secret project, which was actually Siehera's bedroom, with had pink walls with pop art decorating them, and the walls lined with guitars. Overall, this is my absolute favorite episode of the series. And it is perhaps no wonder that it currently ranks as the number one episode out of all 147 episodes, so far. 10 out of 10. Highly recommended; if you do catch it on either TV Land or CMT, watch the whole episode. I guarantee you, you will not be dissapointed.
