The Girl from Philadelphia is one of the first episodes where the crush that Wrangler Jane has on Captain Parmenter really emerges. Wilton's old girlfriend Lucy Lanfield comes to Fort Courage to bring him back to Philadelphia but Sergeant O'Rourke must find a way to stop her. He knows how Wrangler Jane feels about Wilton and knows that he must join forces with her to stop Lucy from succeeding. He first has her demonstrate her horse back riding and shooting skills in the middle of town but Lucy is able to thwart their plans by fainting and takes Wilton's attention away from Jane's demonstration. Lucy announces that they are going to have a tea on Sunday and everyone is invited including Wrangler Jane. Poor Wrangler does not know what to do so she goes to Chief Wild Eagle for help in getting her a nice dress to wear at the tea. A funny line in the show is when Wild Eagle asks Jane what size dress does she know and Jane responds shucks how should I know and Wild Eagle looks at her and says you're a 10. Sergeant O'Rourke also arranges with Wild Eagle to have one of his squaws, Silver Dove, show up as well.

The show then shifts to the Sunday Tea where the Sergeant and Corporal introduces Wrangler Jane all dressed up. Everyone is shocked at how beautiful Jane looks in her new dress, and how smitten Wilton is of her. Lucy sees that she may have a problem and interrupts Wilton and Jane's conversation with the news that she has accepted Wilton's engagement proposal. Wilton is stunned to hear Lucy's announcement and asks her when he proposed to her. Lucy reminded him it was a few years earlier while they were in Philadelphia. Jane joins in the conversation and said maybe he has changed his mind and with that words between the two women increase to the point where they have to be pulled apart and they sit Jane down in a chair to cool down. Finally Sergeant O'Rourke says to Jane I think it is time to leave so Jane gets up out of the chair and begins to leave when Wilton says Jane you cannot leave yet you have not finished your tea and cookies. With that Jane turns and says Wilton do you really want me to stay and begins to walk towards him. On her way towards him Jane has to walk in front of Lucy. Lucy knows she has to do something to stop Jane and Wilton to get together so she comes up with her last and nastiest trick to play on poor Wrangler Jane. As Jane walks past Lucy, on her way to talk to Wilton, Lucy puts out her foot and steps on the hem of the back of Wrangler Janes dress. This causes the dress to rip away from the waist down leaving poor Jane wearing just her bloomers when she arrives in front of Wilton. Wilton stands there stunned at the sight of Wrangler Jane wearing just her bloomers from the waist down and Jane fed up with Lucy's dirty tricks immediately turns to go after Lucy. O'Rourke grabs Jane before she gets to Lucy and quiets her down and talks her into leaving, while the whole time Lucy is denying she ripped Jane's dress and goes as far as saying really Wrangler a true lady doesn't allow a gentlemen to see her bloomers. As they are about to leave Silver Dove walks in and says that she is looking for her husband and points to Wilton. Lucy is so upset she slaps Wilton's face and leaves, Jane still standing there with her bloomers in clear view for everyone to see also slaps Wilton's face and storms out of the room. Finally Silver Dove slaps Wilton and leaves as well. The final scene has Lucy leaving Fort Courage in a stage coach.
