  • Children are a lot smarter than we think

There is a little girl who lives near Buffy and Jody and she's very sick, too sick to go go school. She is able to "attend" classes through a listening device on the teacher's desk. buffy gets to meet Eve when she brings her a new book and they become fast friends while playing games. She tells Eve, and her mom, that her Uncle Bill can "cure" Eve of whatever's ailing her because "Uncle Bill can do anything."

Well, Eve's mother knows that that is impossible, but Bill asks a doctor friend of his to check on Eve's condition.

    Unfortiunately, the result is bleak.

Bill and Eve's parents find out the truth, but do not want to tell Buffy and Jody. So he decides, since Eve will not likely be around for Christmas.

They have a lot of fun decorating the Bowers' house and opening presents, but, there is a lesson to be learned from this...children are a lot wiser than parents think they are.

Buffy was aware that Eve's time was limited, that's why they had Christmas so early. After the Christmas party, Buffy winds up crying on her bed because she knew that Eve will not be around much longer.

It was interesting, too, that Eve was played by Eve Plumb, who would soon play Jan Brady on the Brady Bunchmoreless
  • The Davises bring Christmas in October to a terminally ill little girl.

Buffy has a friend, Eve Bowers (Eve Plumb, aka Jan Brady), in school who never attends class, but uses an intercom. She is unable to physically attend because of an unmentioned terminal illness. To Bill's embarrassement Buffy told her he can do anything. Bill does have her tested by a very good doctor at his expense, but to everyone's dismay the prognosis is not good. So the Davises and Mr. French bring her an early Christmas, fearing she may not live to see the real one. There are presents and a beautiful tree, and Mr. French as Santa. After the festivities it suddenly dawns on Buffy that her friend is dying, and Uncle Bill is there to comfort her.

The sad, tender music heightens the emotion. Have a handkerchief handy for this one.moreless
