  • very funny start to a hilarious show

    9.0
this episode is very funny and is a classic family guy episode
  • The start of a legacy.

    8.0
Sure, the animation may be bad, the voices may seem undeveloped, and the characters are not quite what they are today, but in my opinion, that's what makes it better. In the first episode of one of the greatest shows in television history, Peter Griffin loses his job due to drinking and goes on welfare. Lois get angry at him and everyone else is glad. A really good episode and a really good start for a series. So that is why I give it a good rating of 8/10
  • A good pilot episode that offers a few decent laughs but more importantly gives us a glimpse of what Family Guy is to become

    6.0
Most pilot episodes have yet to appeal to me for some strange reason. I expected the same from Family Guy and that's kinda what I got. The characters didn't really interest me too much in this episode with the exception of Stewie.

This episode follows Peter Griffen who gets fired from his job after drinking and must somehow find a way to raise his family. The plot was the same as the Simpsons pilot except Homer didn't get fired, the laughs were very limited, the characters were done decently, with the expection of Stewie who was hysterical and overall, an episode that can easily be missed. Brian, the dog, however, was funny!

  • A pretty good pilot episode!

    8.5
It has its flaws and I can't say its the best pilot episode I've ever seen but the episode is hilarious filled with gross out gags and inside jokes.
  • Stewie's funny appearence!

    9.5
I loved this episode and I love Family Guy, It was the first episode of the show. After Peter heavily drinks at a bachelor party, even though he told Lois he would not, he gets fired from his job at the Happy-go-Lucky toy factory for being hung over. Peter soon applies for welfare, but after a mix-up, gets sent a check for $150,000. Eventually, Lois finds out, and Peter decides to return the money by dumping it from a blimp at the Super Bowl. He is arrested as a result, and his family ends up coming to his rescue. Stewie was the main reason why this show is so good. It all started when everybody hated eggplants, Laser frightens the family, What on Earth was that? Stewie had a sandwich with a gun in it. What are you two staring at? Its tunafish! Nothing Else...

  • It's the pilot episode of "Family Guy" and it was almost perfect

    9.5
After Peter heavily drinks at a bachelor party, even though he told Lois he would not, he gets fired from his job at the Happy-go-Lucky toy factory for being hung over. Peter soon applies for welfare, but after a mix-up, gets sent a check for $150,000. Eventually, Lois finds out, and Peter decides to return the money by dumping it from a blimp at the Super Bowl. He is arrested as a result, and his family ends up coming to his rescue. I thought that this was an excellent episode of "Family Guy". It's not my favorite episode or even my favorite pilot episode for a show but it was pretty close though. The storyline was handled very well and a lot of parts made me laugh. My score is a tad low because I didn't like how Peter screwed up his family by drinking so much beer and a couple of parts were a tad dragged. Other than that, this is just an all-around enjoyable start to a very funny show even though it did lose some of its charms in the later seasons. There was a lot of parts that made me laugh such as the cutaway with Peter having his first fart and then he says "What the hell was that?", The Kool-Aid jumping through the court wall and say "Oh yeah" when "Oh no" was said like three times, the Super Bowl scene with Peter and Brian in the blimp so Peter can dump all of the money at the stadium and then everyone including one of the football reports are getting the money (probably the funniest part in this episode), Stewie threatening the judge with his laser gun which makes the judge decide to let Peter off with a warning, and many more. Like I said, I really liked it for the most parts. Some shows have weak pilots and some shows have strong pilots. This is one of those shows that has a strong pilot which made me happy. Overall, a hilarious and very creative pilot episode of "Family Guy". 9.5/10
  • Superb pilot for the show

    9.0
I thought this pilot of Family Guy was superb. It was not my favorite and I thought a few scenes were a tad boring. Other than those, I enjoyed this first episode. My favorite/funny parts were the opening, the cutaways where Peter do something stupid (eat ice cream, say something at a movie, getting drunk at church, etc.), the guys watching a porn and then Statue of Liberty video shows up, Peter sleeping on the job, Peter saying weird stuffs about being fired, Stewie using a tuna sandwich, Peter and Brian at a NFL game, and the last part. Speaking of Stewie, he was really funny in this one and that' s why the older Stewie was 10 times better than the newer and gayer Stewie (he still make me laugh). Overall, this episode was superb. 9/10
  • The earlier episodes suck. There, I said it.

    3.5
Am I the only one that doesn't like the earlier episodes? The animation's really ugly, the lines are thick and inconsistent and the pauses are static-y. And the jokes just aren't funny, not even the usually-enjoyable cutaways. The story was barely there, either; fatman loses job, nothing interesting there. I will give them credit for the Stewie bits, though... if only we could transplant old Stewie into new episodes, then we'd have a winning combination. But still, milder Stewie aside, I'll take the newer, post-uncancellation episodes any day... even though I've already seen them a hundred times already. Tee hee...
  • Great pilot episode for Family Guy!

    9.0

For the most part, I thought this was a pretty great start to Family Guy. It wasn't one of the best episodes in my opinion, but it was still pretty awesome, especially for a pilot episode and had a lot of funny jokes, like the flashbacks of Peter being drunk, the Kool-aid man appearing in the court room, and the joke with the bunk beds in the jail cell. I also thought Stewie's parts in this episode were funny, and the ending with Peter apologizing for what he did was very heartwarming. So, overall, it wasn't my favorite episode, but it still made me laugh pretty hard at parts and was a pretty great start to the show.:) Final grade: A-. Marebear2009, out!

  • great

Peter gets drunk at a stag party, and is too sleepy to do his job, and as a result, he gets fired. He tries to get welfare but the check is much higher than he thought it would be, and he is arrested. Will he go to jail?

What I liked: the kool-aid man, Stewie hypnotizing (is that what he did?) the judge, "What did you promise you wouldn't do?" "Drink at the stag party" "And what did you do?" "Drink at the stag p- Whoa! Almost walked right into that one." Not one of my favorite pilots, or even favorite episodes of the show, but it was pretty OK. Final grade would have to be a low "B".
  • Pilots mostly suck, but not in this case.

My review: For the first episode ever, it had me crack up alot. I liked the part when Peter was like "I hope that works, otherwise I'm going to have to start dropping these" and it shows a Spike ball that says 'forgive me Lois" and the Kool-Aid OH YEAH part just cracked me up, the way he walks away with a weird face. Anyways, this episode is worth a watch.

  • First episode of Family Guy

    8.0
When Peter gets drunk at a party, he loses his job because he fell asleep, and let a bunch of dangerous toys get sold. He gets money from welfare, and discovers he has $10,000. He's sure it must have been an accident, but he keeps the money anyway. He buys a bunch of fancy stuff, but when Lois finds out, he has to give the money back. How does he do it? By throwing it out of a blimp during The super bowl. He ends up in jail with Brian.

This was an okay start to the show. I loved all the flashbacks of Peter when he was drunk.

    Overall Grade: 80%/B-
  • This is a classic.

    9.4
This is the first episode of Family Guy. It is really funny.

Peter drinks alot at a bachelor party. He has a huge hangover the next morning, and gets fired. He doesn't tell Lois. Peter applies for welfare. He soon gets a check for $150,000. He says that he got a huge raise to Lois. A bunch of funny stuff happens, like they even get a mote around there house. Lois is talking to that mailman and she hands Lois a welfare check. When Lois finds out she is really mad. He decides to return all the money by dumping all the money onto a super bowl game. He is arrested because of what he did. He is sentences to twenty-four months in prison. Then Stewie conivinces the judge to let him go, and the judge gives Peter his job back. Stewie convinces him with a mind control device. It is wierd, but funny.

    I gice this episode a 9.4 out of 10.
  • A Good First Episode!

A good first episode i knew from wacthing this years ago that family guy was going to be a good show and it was brilliant.
Peter gets fired from hes job at the happy go lucky toy company because he drunk too much beer the night before and ends up going through various other jobs to get money including a sneeze guard but he discovers how to get 150,000 a week which lois finds out about and gets mad as it is from the american taxpayers Peter and Brian then try to give it back and get arrested but stewie gets him out with a mind control ray gun.

  • Pilot of Family Guy!

    9.5
    "Death Has A Shadow"

    Grade: A

Ah! I remember seeing this episode back in late 1999 when it was fresh and totally brand new. The very first episode of Family Guy is a great setup for the Griffins and the town of Quahog, and the plot is decent enough and full of good jokes too.

The episode begins with the Griffins watching TV and Peter tells Lois that he is going to a stag party with some friends. Lois tells Peter that he will not drink alcohol and can go if he complies with that. Peter ends up at the stag party and gets totally smashed. He comes back home and falls asleep on the kitchen table. Lois is disappointed but Peter says nothing went wrong and apologizes to him.
Peter goes to work at the Happy-Go-Lucky toy factory and ends up falling asleep on the job, causing hazardous toys to be made and shipped to children. As a result, Mr Weed, the owner of Happy-Go-Lucky, fires Peter for his negligience.
Peter tells everyone but Lois about what has happened, and fears that he would hurt Lois if he told the truth. He keeps it a secret and decides to apply for welfare to sort out the job issue. A typo on the check of $150,000 a week causes Peter to go crazy spending. Still not telling Lois, he buys everything for the family, but his cover is blown when Lois picks up the mail for the welfare check. Lois is very upset at Peter for lying to him.
To try and win Lois' trust again, Peter decides to give away all his welfare cash via a blimp above the Super Bowl. The blimp is shot down and Peter is taken to court for welfare fraud.
In the courtroom, Peter tries to forgive his family by saying he only did it to buy the things he loves for them. Lois backs Peter up and tells the judge to give him another chance. The judge sends Peter to jail (as well as Lois), but Stewie fortuantly has the mind-control gun to change the Judge's mind of sending Peter and Lois to jail. It works, and Peter is also able to get his job back too. It ends with the family back at the house and Peter trying to think of new ways to make money again.

Overall, a very good and funny episode with obvious jokes, a good character build up, and a plot which works to set everything up correctly. The episode is the first to begin the original run of the series, and works the majority of the time.
  • The one when everyone met the Griffins.

    8.5
This is truly a excellent start to a soon to be succesful series. Being the first episode, the plot is funny, entertaining and overall, just a great start.

The animation? Well, its not perfect, to be honest, its pretty poor, but a big improvement over the original pilot. I'm sure a few people would expect the animation to be below-par, as the creators had never made a show before.

The plot is pretty well written. Peter gets drunk, has a hangover, gets fired from his job and, well I'm not going to spoil it for you.

This show is filled with pointless cutaways, which is basically your typical Family Guy episode.

For the pilot episode, this is not bad at all.
  • Pretty good for a pilot episode.

    8.5
This episode is pretty good, not the best but not the worst. Since this is the very first episode of the series I'll go easy on it. My favorite part of the episode is probably when Peter wakes up on the family table. My favorite quote is from the same scene when Lois says "What did you promise me that you won't do" and Peter says "drink at the stag party". Then Lois says "what did you do" and Peter says "Drink at the stag part- oh I almost walked into that one". That was a terrific scene. Everything else was also pretty good.
  • Meet the Griffins......

    7.5
In the pilot for Family Guy: Peter gets drunk at a bachelor party and the hangover gets him fired from work. Peter thenapplies for welfare after trying and failing to get other jobs but when a check for $150,000 is accidentially sent to him, Peter splurges without telling Lois he was fired in the first place. If you were alive in the 90's then you'll get any cultural reference they throw at you but the juvenile storyline and cheap jokes are probably directed at the same demographic. The writers are very talented and know what's funny but have no idea how to mesh their ideas into a cohesive half hour; by relying on irrelevant cutaways there may as well be a disclaimer that the writers have had no experience with television. The cutaways in a sense work better than the actual plot because they're funnier and in retrospect there's probably more of it, Peter's lame storyline is more like a cutscene that fades in and out. The characters are under – developed in every way; how they sound, how they look and in some cases how they act as Brian is a lot less human and Stewie is flat – out homicidal instead of the effeminate and posh baby now and don't get me started on Quagmire. The animation is generally er, low - key which suits the modest nature of the show but in most cases you feel that the cartoonists aren't even trying. Despite different - sounding voices; the voice artists do a good job at capturing the different personalities but the dialogue is often quite stilted and the conversations never flow. It's not hard to see why Family Guy had a shaky beginning from this very patchy pilot but if you look past the frequently awkward and unfunny moments you appreciate the introduction to this great series.
  • Funny stuff!

    7.0
Peter gets drunk at a party and ends up losing his job because of it. In order to avoid upsetting Lois, Peter tells Brian, Chris, Meg and Stewie about his mishap and then goes on welfare. There is a typo in the amount they are supposed to get ($150,000 vs. $150). Peter spends the money anyway, but when Lois finds out, she gets angry with him. He tries to make it up to her. In court, Peter is sentenced to 24 monthes of prison, but with the help of Stewie's mind control device, they all are off the hook.

This was a good first episode! It was really funny and I love the different spoofs they had. My favorite was the Kool-Aid guy. It is definitely inappropriate, but this episode seemed pretty mild in that area. There was drinking, profanity, and some mild sexual references though. I give this episode an 7.0 out of 10!
  • the best pilot of them all

Against strict orders from Lois, Peter drinks profusely at his buddy's bachelor party. After showing up at work hung over, Peter gets fired. When he applies for welfare, they accidentally send him a check for $150,000, which leads to a spending binge. When Lois discovers the truth, Peter attempts to return the money to the taxpayers by dumping it from a blimp at the Super Bowl. But when he is arrested, his family must come to the rescue.it is a great start for a great show.the droped soap gag was too funny.and don't forget the kool aid man joke.overall a top ten episode

  • The one that started it all

    8.6
In this episode Peter is assembly line worker at the Happy Go Lucky toy store, who is sleeping off a big hangover from the night before. While Peter is sleeping, dangerous and hazardous items pass his station on the conveyter belt and are packaged. His boss, Mr. Weed, then fires him. Peter applies for welfare and accidently recieves $150,00. His wife, Lois, finds out and is furious at Peter for not reporting it. In an attempt to apologize, Peter is arrested. He then goes before a judge and is cleared of all charges. This episode has excellent plot, and animation but is a little low on humer.

The first season of Family Guy.. oh how I love this season. This episode, for example, is one episode that could have been the main reason that the DVD sales were good. Well, it's all the episodes of the season. I thought this episode's plot was great. Although, I got used to the humor of this episode after watching it so long, but I do remember it was so hilarious when I wasn't used to it.

Peter Griffin loses his job after dangerous toys pass inspection, and he goes on welfare. Well, after Lois finds out his welfare is more than he was supposed to get, he drops all the money at the Super Bowl and has to go on trial. After he is sentenced to 24 months in prison, Stewie can't take it anymore. He threatens the judge with violence. Well, not really.

This episode was wonderful, and I enjoyed. it!
  • Pilot episode, and it's a good one at that.

    9.0
This episode is the pilot. This episode is the episode that started the legendary series airing on FOX: Family Guy.

Being used to the episodes with all these 3-D effects, and really good animation, I'm just saying that the animation could've been a bit better. The character's eyes changing from large to smal; again was a bit annoying, if you ask me.

Again, I'm very used to episodes from mid Season 2 up. The voices are really- well, weird. Lois, Chris, and Meg all have different voices than they do niw- and I haven't gotten used to them. Espically Chris, then Meg in second, then Lois tied with Meg.

I loved this episode, it was a great pilot episode, one of the greatest pilots out there, but some of the jokes didn't really catch me laughing hard.

    9 out of 10.
