I just started watching this show about a week ago. I love it. My wife and I are always arguing about whether the family can hear Stewie or not. Do they hear him or not?

Yes, it has been explained that everyone can hear and understand what Stewie says, but since he is just a baby the adults don't take him seriously.

I think that Brian is the only one that actually talks to him and does stuff with him, but look closely when Stewie talks they just look at him and they later begin to talk to another guy...

In episode "E Peterbus Unum" there is a joke about it at the end, where a student from the future asks if they understand the baby, but it is left unanswered...

Yeah they understand him, they just don't care much and don't really take it seriously or pay attention too much since he's just a baby.

Just like his sexuality (straight or gay) whatever suits the show at the moment. Such as some moments are funnier if they don't understand him and vice versa.

Maybe what everyone else is hearing is just baby language...like everything he says translates to baby language to them, so we te viewers and Brian are the only ones that can truly understand what Stewie is actually saying...

    Just a thought.

i have always questioned this myself...but i think they either make him able to understand him when its conveniant. cause when lois is trying to ween stewie to a bottle and he keeps telling her stuff, she only responds to his actions and never what he says

Don't forget, Peter can understand him too. When Peter was trying to potty train Stewie, Stewie made a comment about doing something while watching porn and Peter responded with "Really?".

In the "Untold Story" commontary, Seth says that they just make it so its convenient to the story, and sometimes they understand him and sometimes they dont.
