    Superb
  • Biggest grab for ratings in a while

    4.0
Oh this episode is a classic in Family Guy history for grabbing of ratings, at least in my opinion. I remember hearing season 12 wasn't doing so well with low to mediocre ratings so I wasn't surprised they did something drastic to try to get the ratings back up. I still remember the commercials for the episode. "Someone from the main family is going to be killed off". I was a bit surprised at first. After all, they did kill off some characters in season 9, episode 1 "And there were fewer". Honestly, I felt that it was either going to be Chris or Meg (More-so Chris because he's kinda boring now). In the end, Brian was the one who bit the dust.

First off, Brian has been such an unlikable character post season 6 so honestly, it was hard to care much for him since then. Had this happened in season 3 or 4, I think it would have impacted me more. Anyway, Brian gets struck by a car and ends up dying. I have to say that the funeral scene was done pretty good in Family Guy style.

A week passes and the family is trying to cope with the loss of Brian and decide to get a new dog. We are introduced to a new dog named Vinnie who pretty much replaces Brian. As we see the family getting to know him, it seems like everyone is moving on from Brian pretty fast. All except Stewie who still misses him and doesn't want to accept Vinnie. Eventually, Stewie warms up to him and that's pretty much it.

Honestly, I didn't like Vinnie much. The thing that bothered me with him is that his jokes/gags seemed to center around Italian stereotypes. It's not that I thought they were offensive, I just felt that they would get old VERY quick. As much of a douchebag Brian has become, he is multifaceted in personality and in some twisted way, Family Guy needs him. Modern Family Guy has been very hit-and-miss and the episodes centered around Stewie and Brian's friendship helps make the show watchable most of the time. So in an ironic way, the show needs Brian despite how unlikable he has become.

Overall, this episode was okay. I cracked up at the Grimace cutaway the first time I saw it. But seriously, when it was revealed that Brian was the one to get killed off, I rolled my eyes. Brian is pretty much Seth MacFarlane as a cartoon character so there was no way he was going to stay dead. I knew they'd come up with some weird way to bring him back and they did. Vinnie would never work as a standalone character compared to Brian. Heck, even New Brian posed more charisma.

So while this episode didn't pull at my heartstrings, it was okay I guess.moreless
  • Underrated Tearjerker

    9.5
This episode was amazing, but as a Christian, I was a bit offended by some of the religious jokes. (Don't worry guys I'm not one of those religious Other than that, I really liked the plot. It was a tearjerker to see Brian die, but that is why I loved this episode. It also reminds me of "Over The Top," from Regular Show, where Rigby dies.

I will admit that it was kind of cruel how everyone forgets about Brian by getting a new dog, but I loved how Stewie still remembered Brian. This is coming from someone who is a cat person rather than a dog person too. I'm not sure why so many people hate it, but if you do hate it then I will respect your opinion. I give this episode a 9.5/10

  • About 216 episodes in I've had enough..

    4.5
That's it. No more Family Guy after this stupid episode. I've been a long-time fan of the series since the very first season. Had many good laughs over the years. In the last couple of seasons I've been getting tired of the the 'sillier-than-before' jokes. This recent "killing" of Brian was just too much. Yes, season 12's first 6 episodes is the worst I've seen.

They killed Brian for no reason? Thank god he came back.
