    • Rachel: (about their father) He's trying to make amends, and if we don't meet him half way, we'll be making the same mistake he did.
Harriette: I know. But how could the man just leave and never give us another thought?
Jimmy: I thought about you. I thought about you every day of my life. Harriette, I know that what I did was wrong and I will hate myself forever for it. But what I want you to know... no, what I need you to know, is that even though we weren't together, I never stopped loving you.

    • Carl: Let's say that you really are Harriette and Rachel's father. Why did they think you were dead?
Jimmy: I was only 18 when I married Darlene, and we had problems from the get go. She thought it would help if we had kids, but in many ways it just made things worse. Now, I stuck it out for five years. But then, when Harriette was three and Rachel was one... I bailed out.
      Carl(sickened) You abandoned them.
Jimmy: I sent money, and I called, and one day Darlene told me to stop calling. She said she had told Harriette and Rachel that their father had been shot down over Korea.
Carl: Now why did she do that?
Jimmy: She said she didn't want her little girls growing up thinking that their father had run out on them.

    • Jimmy: You gave me this when you were three years old.
Harriette: (reading) "Happy Valentine's Day Dady", D-A-D-Y, "I love you always."
      Jimmy: Always.

    • Carl: Well, you know, it's tough for me to sympathize with you, Jimmy. I mean, no marriage is easy. There were times when I wanted to pull my hair out.
      Jimmy: I can see that.

    • Carl: There is a guy on our couch who says I remember him, but I don't remember him.
Harriette: Well, tell him you don't remember him.
Carl: I can't tell him I don't remember him because I already told him I do remember him! So, if I tell him I don't remember him, I'll look like a jerk and I still won't remember him.
Harriette: Well, if he remembers you, he's used to you looking like a jerk.
