Hey, does anyone know why Harriett # 1 quit the show?

From what I've heard, she didn't like how much the show was being centered around Steve Urkel, so she quit.

Yep, that's correct as to why she quit, at first the show was supposed to center around the family and Steve be an recurring character, but his popularity shot up quickly and he became the central part of the show.  Jo Marie Payton didn't like that and quit

I've read that she left because they wouldn't let her direct an episode or give her a bigger role in the creative process. The show had revolved around Steve for like six years by that point, if that was the reason she left she probably would have done it years prior.

Makes sense. Her leaving had nothing to do with Urkel.

Yeah.  I thought of that too.  Urkel was popular long before JoMarie Payton left.  So I guess it was probably because of both those reasons.  I just wish that they hadn't replaced her though.  While, JudyAnn Elder is talented and all, JoMarie Payton is by far the best Harriette.  After all she played that role even before FM started and has been great at it for so many years.  If only she would have stuck around for the last few eps.  Just thought I'd bring that up.

Well, at the time, she didn't know that it was the final season for the series. She left halfway through season 9, her last appearance is "Deck the Malls," that season's Christmas episode. The cast wrapped filming for season 9 ("Lost in Space") thinking that they were coming back for a tenth season, but then it was cancelled and the cast was shocked to learn the sets were taken down. So when she quit, she did not know she was walking out halfway through the last season. If she did, she might have stuck out the rest of the season. I really wish she had, because while Judyann Elder is really good at the role, and I can completely see why she was chosen as the replacement, there is no compensating for the original. So it's too bad, even if she wanted to quit, that she didn't at least stick out the rest of the season, because if she had, then the series would have ended anyway. But hindsight is 20/20, and there's no way she could have known, so she left halfway through the season before the winter hiatus.

I heard it was because she didnt like what her character had become. She didnt feel like she was playing the same Harriet Winslow as she did when it started. I dont think its because of Steve Urkel.

yeah i doubt it was really b/c of the show centering around steve b/c it was like that for a long time. i didnt like the second hariette b/c she didnt look or act anything like the original hariette. now, i know they cant get an exact clone of hariette but out of all the actors there are im sure one would better fit the role.

Well, here's something I've found out. Both JoMarie Payton and JudyAnn Elder have guest-starred on That's So Raven. JoMarie Payton played Raven's meternal grandmother and JudyAnn Elder played her paternal grandmother. Unfortunately, each of them appeared in only one episode each. Well, that's all I know.
