  • Kind of a mixed situation

Steven and his dad fight all the time because they have so many different views on things. Jake says that he's come for the last time and Steven first assumes that Jake is saying he won't come visit unless he can take Alex out of school to go fishing or hunting and says that's just fine. Then Steven's feelings suddenly change when he finds out that it's going to be Jake's last visit because he's dying. Steven then feels so guilty about having all those arguments with Jake and feels he should've been happy to have his dad alive. But Elyse tells Steven that you can't build a relationship with someone on the possibility that they're going to die, it's not the way life works. This episode just demonstrates how you don't know how much you love someone until you realize that you're losing them. A lot of people think like Jake does when they're on the verge of dying, they don't want to spend the precious time they have left lying in a hospital bed hooked up to machines. They want to experience things that they never have before while they still have the time. Like Jake has never tried white-water rafting and wants to do that before he dies. But Jake and Steven make peace with each other which is something everyone should do before dying.
