I don't know if they were filming a real house or what, but it was very, very dirty. The walls all looked like someone had been sitting there smoking for 20 years. In subsequent episodes, it appears, they painted the kitchen cabinets and everything looks cleaner.

Also, there were some continuity errors. In episode 1, Nancy is pregnant. We never hear what happened with that, but she obviouslystill only had Timmy.When Kate complains that she wanted to abort all three of her kids, she neglects to mention that she actually had four children but one died we find out several episodes later.

Well, as far as the grimey first house in the pilot, this is usually how it goes as for a pilot episode. The sets are generally not represented as "perfectly" as in later episodes.

Maybe the family DID repaint the house after the first episode!

And about the abortion thing, it's not a continuity error is you consider that Kate sees her three children as her "here and now" children. She has three children while she was making the statement about having previously 'thought' about aborting each of them. Timmy, the one who died, in her view is long gone and is not considered part of the group she has now.

It's not really a continuity error, it's just a matter of perception within the character and figures of speech.
