  • 1. In "The Return," Helena Marsh (Samantha Eggar) comes back to claim her unrequited love for Mr. Roarke. 2. "The Toughest Man Alive" is the tale of a cowardly loser (Red Buttons) who wants to be a combo of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.moreless

In "The Return," the series promises to do something interesting-bend its own rules; first, by letting a customer come back for a second bite of the cherry and second, by letting Mr. Roarke get emotionally involved with said customer's fantasy at the same time he's indulging HIS OWN fantasy!

Too bad that the showrunners decided after dipping their toes into these strange waters, to come down with cold feet and run to safe, bland ground...

Do you really thing Mr. Roarke and Helena Marsh (Samantha Eggar,) who declare a mutual love for one another, actually get to the altar? It's not so much that this wasn't allowed to happen-that's understandable, as the show might've been weighted down unnecessarily if Mr. Roarke had marital duties to attend to on a weekly basis, but rather, it's how unimaginatively the situation was devised to fizzle out before the end credits that makes this installment such a disappointment. Kudos only to guest star Eggar, who brings a regal bearing and singular beauty to the proceedings.

On the other hand, "The Toughest Man Alive" is worse! Red Buttons as a schlepper is not just believable, it's a rusty old clichè! But the real trouble is that the Oscar winning actor seems unable to break his own mold, and his "tough guy" persona is Grade Z acting all the way! "Fantasy Island" was always hit and miss...unfortunately, this episode represents a nasty double-whammy.moreless
