YOU BETCHA NEWS

... FX's long-gestating adaptation of the Coen brothers' Fargo finally has a leading man. Billy Bob Thornton will play Lorne Malvo, a troublemaker who makes life for an insurance salesman really tough. The role is similar to the one Steve Buscemi played in the film. FX's version is planned as a 10-episode limited run that's inspired by the movie and features new characters and crimes. [FX via press release]

BUSINESS TIME

... The feud between CBS and Time-Warner Cable rages on and the losers are YOU. Well, if you're a Time-Warner Cable subscriber, that is. As of this afternoon, several TWC markets have dropped CBS and its sister channels Showtime, TMC, Flix, and Smithsonian after a dispute over carriage fees. CBS has reportedly demanded a 600-percent increase in fees from TMC, and TMC is saying "No way, Jose." Spats between networks and cable companies have happened before, but they're usually resolved quickly when one mega-corporation budges. This is the first and only time I am happy to be a Comcast subscriber. [Deadline Hollywood]

... What is it with you people and Sharknado!?!?!? After a decent run on television, the Syfy sharksploitation movie was promoted to special single-screening events in Regal cinemas in major cities, and those screenings have now sold out... prompting theaters to add more dates. Though it initially wasn't a hit on Syfy, the movie, which is obviously about a tornado full of sharks, has increased its viewership in each of its two encore airings. [The Wrap]

... Great TV Alert: The most recent half-season of Breaking Bad is now available on Netflix. The final episodes begin next Sunday, August 11. [Netflix]

... CBS really wants to work with comedian Jim Gaffigan. After passing on Gaffigan's single-camera family comedy last season, the network wants to redevelop the series and give it another shot. The scrapped plan means that the cast members who were originally slated for the pilot, except for Gaffigan obvs, have been let go. [Deadline Hollywood]

... A sci-fi drama pilot from newcomer writer Mickey Fisher has a bunch of TV types spinning their bow ties with excitement. Extant tells the story of a family with an android son and a possible alien baby on the way. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... True Blood's Janina Gavankar is ditching the sexy vampires of Bon Temps for the sexy vampires of Mystic Falls, and who can blame her? Gavankar, who got butt nekkid on the HBO series as a shapeshifter, will play a character named Tessa who arrives in Mystic Falls ready to re-spark an old love. [TV Line]

... Why don't you have a seat over here, Chris Hansen? You're fired. NBC News hasn't renewed the To Catch a Predator host's contract, ending his relationship with the network that he's been part of for 20 years. Now Hansen is free to interview with other outlets, but if the interviewee looks a little young, run! [TV Guide]

... Antonio Sabato Jr. will guest-star on an episode of Castle in the series' spoof on a murder involving a cast member on a Saved By the Bell-type show. Antonio will play the grown-up version of the boy-hunk from a fake series called 2 Cool for School. [TV Guide]

... Coming to The Colbert Report: Daft Punk! 1997 me would be so excited! [Idolator]

... Comedy Central's roast of James Franco will be hosted by one of Franco's good buddies, Seth Rogen. The special will air on Labor Day—Monday, September 2. Sample roast: "James Franco you're so cool and handsome that you can have any girl or role you want." Because come on, how do you make fun of James Franco? [Comedy Central via press release]

... American Horror Story: Coven, the next incarnation of the FX horror series, will bring back Alexandra Breckenridge. You may recall that she played the sexy young housekeeper who waved her ass in the air in Season 1. [Ryan Murphy's Twitter]

I hope they can find something for Jim Gaffigan, but I fear he's too funny to be the lead.

It's probably about time for Billy Bob to head back to tv. When's the last time he had a good movie, anyway?

As a TWC customer in Los Angeles, I can't say I'm happy about losing CBS 2 (nobody in LA cares about KCAL 9 anymore after CBS bought it and gutted it), but seeing the messages from CBS about "fair compensation for the most-watched television network with the most popular content in the world, WE WILL NOT ACCEPT LESS" and wanting to jack up everyone's rates $2 a month is disgusting. "We will not accept less" really bothers me, you don't DESERVE that money, it's not something they took from you, you are saying each customer who wants to give your advertisers viewing time also should have more money taken out of their pockets straight into yours because you're popular and have the ability to bully?

Oh yeah, and say goodbye to 37% of your Los Angeles advertising revenues, jerks. That's how much TWC covers in the LA metro area of 12 million people, I'm sure your local and even national marketing campaigns will love paying your same ad rates for over a third less viewership in the largest single market in the US.

On the other hand, screw you TWC for posting record profits and bitching about how pricing has to be handed down to the customer. You have 15 million customers and posted $5.4 billion revenue in the 4th quarter of '12 alone, maybe you don't need to rob every last coffer out of the pockets of average Americans so you can wipe your ass with hundred dollar bills; it's obvious you're not putting that revenue back into your pointlessly slow internet service or putting more HD channels on the tv or just lowering prices so your customers don't get angry enough to revolt and demand the government shut your oligopoly asses down.

Hey, KCAL 9 has Evelyn Taft doing the weather. Dis the only reason it'll be missed.

Damn, and CBS2 has Jackie Johnson, good point. Oh well, I guess pre-teen boys will have to try to yank it to KTLA5's Vera Jimenez without cringing (Vera is an attractive woman who dresses entirely wrong, thinking she's a barbie doll, which makes her very difficult to look at; also her personality is grating on TV, not that a lot of pre-teen yankers care about personalities tho').

What about that blonde one on KTLA5? I watched its morning news for years. IIRC, she won the contest to be hired.

Yep, that's her! I also don't watch the morning news too. However, I don't watch TV news at all these days.

You win, I'm not creepy enough to know that one. ;) Also I don't watch morning news anymore. They picked their morning weather reporter from a contest? Yikes. My research says Jessica Holmes, but that can't be right because that's clearly the porniest name ever.

I'm nervous about Fargo. It can't be as good as the movie. If it becomes another gritty cop drama I'll gouge my eyes out.

you want a light hearted fluffy cop drama?

Somewhere in the middle would be ideal, especially with this source material.

Janina Gavankar should totally be cast as Arianne Martell or as Lady Nymeria Sand on Game of Thrones!

billy bob in a fargo miniseries sounds great to me.

CBS is so far up it's own ass.. from not making their shows available on hulu and netflix like every other network, not making person of interest available on it's own website (not that that would keep me from torrenting it, cbs.com sucks) to the absolute (or middling) garbage that somehow tops tv rankings despite what it is. it makes me proud to be a TWC customer despite the fact I just have them as my IP.

don't ask me how I know, but Gavankar or someone connected to her actually went on a campaign to scrub evidence of her nudity doings from the interwebs. must. push . back.

I hope nothing keeps you from torrenting or whatever Person of Interest. In one way or another, everybody with some taste should be able to watch it!

A 600% increase in carriage fees?! Wow, there's greed and then there's GREEEEEEEEEED. I'm sure there's as much to dislike about TWC as any other cable company, but surely even they [probably] don't deserve that much abuse.

I honestly can't imagine a single camera comedy show on CBS...

I always think Multi-Cam. But I guess Robin William's show is single cam.. .ANYTING CAM HAPPEN.

I think it's time to think bigger things for Sharknado...a regular series, guest spots on prime time shows (Mad Men seems a perfect fit or a Wall Street business panel), an animated series that is edgy and unpredictable...the possibilities are endless...lol...

" CBS has reportedly demanded a 600-percent increase in fees from *TMC, and *TMC is saying "No way, Jose." "
I think you meant *TWC the cable company not TMC (the channel).

Why can't I reply to the comment below? This is so confusing! So..where ma head at? Wut happened? Is this real life? My head! OMG! This is la cray cray! How did I write TMC and not TCM? Shoo gurrl...hold up...wut? Dis must b da illuminati fo realz yo!
Flag
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) shows old movies (tho I guess TMC could too but seeing that ive just heard about it I wouldn't know)
Flag
Every time one of these disputes happen I can't help but wonder why no one is pushing for a real way to measure TV ratings. CBS thinks their content is worth more than what TWC thinks. Just imagine if they had real data to back up their positions.
