In an effort to make him vulnerable to a seduction by her secretary Lexi, Maria slips a roofie into her son, Luke's, drink. Luke and William then rejoin Maria and Lexi for dinner, where Luke questions Maria and William to explain how they met. They explain that they met through a business deal, but Luke remains skeptical that he's being told the whole story. Luke finally gets a bit aggressive and pointedly asks William what he wants from Maria. Maria is scandalized by Luke's behavior, and Lexi jumps in, asking William about his education. William explains that he went to Wharton, and that he does not come from money. He's made and lost money all on his own. Luke asks if William's previous talk about Luke's art was just talk, designed to score points with Luke and his mother. William claims that he's a genuine fan of Luke's artwork. William asks Luke if he's still dating Michelle, and Luke says yes, but that she's in New York on business. Maria explains that she sent her there to buy new materials and scout other fashion boutiques. William asks how long Michelle will be gone, and when Luke says just a few days, he says, "While the cat's away," suggesting that Luke has room to prowl. But Luke downplays the suggestion, clearly disappointing Maria. Williams asks if there are any problems with Michelle, and Luke mentions her problems with Lance. He recounts the altercation with Lance, when Lance held Luke and Michelle at gunpoint. Maria is shocked that Luke never told her, and William asks why Luke didn't press charges. Luke tells them that he stood up to Lance. When he refers to Lance by his full name, William is shocked, admitting that Lance is his own accountant. Everyone grows uncomfortable with talk about Lance, so Maria changes the subject to how she and William got engaged. They all get up to leave, and the effects of the rohypnol have made Luke very unsteady. As Williams steadies him, his phone rings and Maria answers it. On the other line is Sophia, who hangs up when Maria asks her who she is.
