Father Brown

Show Summary

Welcome to the Father Brown guide at TV.com. Adapted from the short stories by G.K. Chesterton, Father Brown is a devout Catholic priest who acts as a freelance private investigator, solving muder-mysteries through a spiritual and philosophical thought process rather than scientific deduction.

  • In the England of the 1920s, an eccentric-seeming Catholic priest demonstrates an uncanny knack for solving crimes - although he is more interested in divine justice than the earthly variety.

Kenneth More was not quite the right man for the role of the tubby little priest "with eyes as empty as the North Sea", but it is hard to think of any actor of the early 70s who would have fitted the bill any better. These adaptations stuck fairly closely to the Chestertonian originals, although sometimes they needed padding out to last the required 50 or so minutes; they also retained the theological element which makes the stories so interesting whilst diminishing the propaganda aspects of the stories which are occasionally off-putting for non-Catholic readers. The mysteries themselves are most elegant, and this brief series was generally satisfying.moreless
