  • A good example of surprising the viewer.

At its best this show could keep you guessing for the answer to the central riddle. This episode serves as a good example. (Spoilers follow!) It has a limited setting, a large cast with some characters that are nicely introduced but turn out to be unimportant, some secondary plots using cultural and social tension and it asks the viewer to pay attention. The solution to the problem is suggested by lines early in the episode, the fake theories are not overdone.

It even plays with its own format. In many of the thirteen episodes you get the same set-up: a man makes some enemies and after twenty minutes he's killed. Here, Valentin seems to be the likely victim, then he changes into the detective, finally he turns out to be the murderer.moreless

    • Father Brown: You French people are far more democratically minded than we are. You appear not to have a tradesmen's entrance.

    • Lord Galloway: I was always under the impression that you fellows went in for things of the spirit and didn't go in for society much.
Father Brown: On the contrary, sir, there's nothing we like better. You see, we don't have to dress up for dinner.

    • Valentin: No one at this table has seen an execution.
      Father Brown: I have.
Valentin: Oh, yes, of course. It is your function to provide the unfortunate with a visa for the next world.
Father Brown: What else can I do, Monsieur Valentin, when you provide him with a deportation order from this one?
