The Holy Stone of Clonrichert is to be upgraded to a class 2 relic, and unfortunately this entails three Bishops visiting the island - Father Jack must be housetrained quickly. Only one of the bishops dies - Ted therefore considers this to have been a relatively successful visit.moreless
  • Three bishops arrive to raise the Holy Stone of Clonrichert to a Class II relic, and that means Ted has to get Jack and Dougal on their very best behavior. Of course, that's no easy task.moreless

This is the first episode of Father Ted I ever saw, and still one of my favorites. It's quintessential Father Ted.

Dougal is as sweetly and charmingly idiotic as ever as he inadvertently causes one of the bishops to have a complete crisis of faith. And Ted trying to teach Jack two new phrases in preparation for the bishops' visit--"That would be an ecumenical matter" and "Yes"--is hysterical. In the end, of course, things don't go quite as Ted planned. One of the bishops becomes a hippie and another has an uncomfortably close encounter with the Holy Stone of Clonrichert. But with only one bishop dead, Ted counts the visit pretty successful.

A classic episode, very funny, with some of the best character moments in the series.moreless
  • Three bishops come to raise the level of a holy relic on the island. Our guys and a sight-challenged Mrs. Doyle are their hosts.

Just when you think it's safe to visit Craggy Island....

Not only is the momentary lull of not having Len/Bishop Brennan to host relaxes the audience, the getting Father Jack spiffed up comes along.

Actually, this episode puts me in mind of a domino art piece/Rube Goldberg invention. Everything is set up just right and then the bits fall into place. With this show, that's not a bad thing, as the anticipation of what you're sure is to follow is where the comedy comes from. Clever writers can give you a sly twist that's been set up in front of you as well. That's what we have here.

How our three priests take three perfectly happy bishops and then reduce the them to their various fates is wrong, and awful and hilarious. Mrs. Doyle has a couple of funny moments, as she does, and just owns them.

I love Dougal and Ted; their arguement over watching Aliens was just right as well.

Of course, this is the episode with the classic Jack line "That would be an ecumenical matter!" On paper, that seems pretty flat, but if you haven't tried the episode? Do so.

I find Jack a little bit sweet and rootable when trying to learn his phrases; if that's wrong, so be it! Frank Kelly obviously had fun and stole the show, as a whole.

I heartily recommend this episode (and this show) to folks not easily offended over religious humor.moreless

    • (Mrs Doyle screams) Mrs Doyle: It's Bishop Jordan. I think he's dead! (Ted, Dougal and Bishop O'Neill follow Mrs Doyle) Mrs Doyle: There, there he is! Ted: Mrs Doyle, that's a dustbin.

    • Father Ted: Dougal, we are not watching Aliens, have you got that?

    • Father Dougal: So, if God has existed forever...you know, what did he do in his spare time, like, before he made the Earth and everything?

    • Dougal: Bishops love sci-fi!

    • Dougal: I don't believe in organised religion.

    • Bishop Facks: So, Father. Do you ever have any doubts about the religious life? Is your faith ever tested? Anything you would be worried about? Any doubts you've been having about any aspects of belief? Anything like that? Dougal: Well, you know the way God made us all, right? And he's looking down at us from heaven and everything? Bishop Facks: (nods) Uh-huh. Dougal: And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that? Bishop Facks: Yes. Dougal: And when we die we're all going to go to heaven? Bishop Facks: Yes. What about it? Dougal: Well, that's the bit I have trouble with.

    • Ted: That's the great thing about Catholicism – it's so vague. No-one knows what it's really all about.

    • Father Jack: That would be an ecumenical matter!

    • Ted: Now Jack, we're going to learn a few new words for when the bishops arrive. Father Jack: DRINK! Ted: No you cant say that. Father Jack: FECK! Ted: Jack! Jack: GIRLS! Ted: NO No no were going to learn nice words for the Bishops. (A blackboard is shown with some phases on it) Ted: Now try to read the first word. Father Jack: DRINK! Ted: No..That Father Jack: DRINK! Ted: THAT! Father Jack: DRINK! Ted: JACK...if you do it you'll get a drink!. Father Jack: Drink?..Th..th..th Ted: THATS IT! Father Jack: Th...th..thAT! Ted: YESSS now the second word..WOULD!
