3rd Place: Germany vs. Portugal
AIRED:
Having gone as far as the semi-finals, Germany and Portugal played for bronze and pride in their last match of the 2006 World Cup finals at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion in Stuttgart.
Both sides were without some of their key players, Germany's trio of Arnie Friedrich, Per Mertesacker and skipper, Michael Ballack were out due to injuries. And Portugal's full-back, Miguel, was not in the line-up.
Jurgen Klinsmann's squad were in white shirts, socks, and black shorts. And Portugal played in their port red attire.moreless

      • Portugal coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari: My team didn't do much wrong today. Germany were very effective, particularly with their long-range efforts, and there wasn't much we could do about that. There was nothing to choose between the teams in the first half, but in the second, we let two goals in one after the other, the first from a swerving shot and the second when Petit deflected a free-kick. Germany's third goal was a beauty though. We had chances ourselves, but we just couldn't put them away.

      • Germany coach, Jurgen Klinsmann: It was an entertaining game, and both teams had their chances. The way Bastian Schweinsteiger turned the whole game with those three shots is the kind of amazing thing that can only happen in football.

      • Portugal striker, Nuno Gómez: Unfortunately fourth place feels a bit hollow and we deserved a different scoreline. But we're proud of what we've done and at the end of the day to finish fourth in a World Cup that has been as competitive as this one is good. The fact that Figo and Pauleta are both saying goodbye represents the end of an era, but we have to respect their decisions and congratulate them on their magnificent careers.

      • Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): When all's said and done, this fourth place finish means a lot to us and to the whole of Portugal. We're happy with what we've done here and we all deserve credit for the joy that we've brought to our people. The only negative thing about this World Cup is that we're loosing two great players, Luis Figo and Pauleta, who both made me feel at home in the team. I have learned a lot from both of them.
