  • Another game that turned on poor officiating

This was a deceptive scoreline because one might think that Argentina had their way with Mexico. But until they scored a goal from an offside position, Mexico had the run of the play. They had two terrific chances to score including hitting a crossbar. The worry was in clear evidence on the Argentinian sideline in the first 15-20 minutes of the match.

Then came the offside goal soon followed by another and although Mexico got one back, the match was never really in doubt in the second half.

Messi has been the best player in the World Cup so far, but he is going to have to step up his game game if Argentina has hopes of a semi-final berth. They got away with a poor start against Mexico and one thinks that such a start against the Germans will not go unpunished. Also, I doubt that there will be any more gift goals.

I hope Argentina wins, but I have serious doubts after today's games.moreless

Well, at least Mexico got one goal here; they have that to be excited about, but this has to be a disappointing World Cup for Montezuma's country. Mexico has always been a strong soccer team and even though they were facing Argentina, a lot of people thought that they still had a legitimate shot at advancing here, but it was not to be.

Even though Argentina easily moved on, it was Carlos Tevez, not Lionel Messi, who helped them do it. Argentina is a strong team, but Messi really needs to step and be the best in the world if Argentina wants to win it all.moreless

    • Argentina Forward Carlos Tevez: We struggled to get into the game in the first few minutes. We knew that Mexico would pressurize us and that they had the potential to harm us. We couldn't build any attacks because we didn't have the ball, but in the end we managed to play well and take a big step forward to the quarter-finals. I was lucky enough to see the goal open up for me and score a couple of important goals, although it wasn't easy tonight. We should savor this win and then make sure we rest for the Germany game. That won't be easy either.

    • Mexico Coach Javier Aguirre: I thought we were pretty evenly matched going into the game and Mexico probably edged it in the first few minutes. We had a couple of chances but then we let one in, and just as we were trying to come back from that they scored another. Those two mistakes really changed the course of the game, though the team played with a lot of dignity and tried hard to come back. We almost made it to 3-2 but there's not much else you can say really. We need to keep working because we've got a generation of very good players here. We need to make the most of them and get back to the World Cup in four years' time.

    • Argentina Coach Diego Maradona: All I can do is congratulate the players because they're doing things well, playing the ball around and enjoying themselves. The team looked comfortable out there, despite the quality of the opposition.
