This match was certainly not the World Cup's best, although Arjen Robben's goal that opened the scoring was world class. The Dutch as the #4 team in the FIFA rankings so today's victory was according to form. Slovakia had a terrific World Cup advancing out of the group stages, something that nobody predicted. Their victory of Italy will go down in the nation's footballing history and be remembered for a long time.

In this match, I never had the idea that the Slovaks would find a way back after falling behind 1-0. The Dutch seemed comfortable throughout the match and I never felt they were in danger of not going through.

The last second penalty was dubious, but a nice ending to a terrific World Cup campaign that the entire nation can be proud of.moreless

Are they the Dutch? Is it Holland? Or is it the Netherlands? (People who watch Seinfeld know what I'm referring to.) Whoever they are, their magical run continues as they knocked off Slovakia, a team who most people confuse with Slovenia, in the round of 16. Could they get to the final four? Possibly, but not probably.

The Netherlands have not had a bad world cup thus far, but they have not had a spectacular one either. But the great thing about this is that anything can happen and it only takes one good game to move on and shock the world.moreless

    • Netherlands Midfielder and Man of the Match Arjen Robben: It's a tremendous result, but that wasn't exactly our best performance. Winning was the most important thing. We've yet to turn in anything close to a perfect performance. Everyone thinks we'll play Brazil now, but Chile have a great team too. We're delighted to be through, but I think we'll have to improve for the quarter-finals. If it's Brazil, it'll need to be a little bit better than today. I'm very pleased with my own display. I'm not 100 per cent fit yet, but it was good enough for today.

    • Slovakia Coach Vladimir Weiss: The Netherlands were tough opponents. We were courageous and we threw our hearts into it. We're proud we made it into the last sixteen, but the better team is through to the next round. The penalty at the end will lighten the mood a little on the plane home.

    • Netherlands Coach Bert van Marwijk: We played well for the first half-hour. We were good at the start of the second half too, but we failed to add a second goal. (Goaltender) Maarten Stekelenburg then saved us twice at a very important time.
