  • A Forgettable Match with a Dramatic Penalty Shootout

I was very disappointed in this match as neither side seemed all that interested in generating much offense in the 120 minutes of game action. The game has penalty shootout written all over it and the Japanese especially seemed content to take their chances from the penalty. That was a shame since they have shown that they can be a very good offensive side when they put their minds to it.

In the end, the better team did go through. It's impossible to stop a well taken penalty and it's tough to ever blame a goalkeeper for not saving one. The Paraguayans took some excellent kicks and the Japanese missed one high off the crossbar.

I feel for the Japanese player who has the burden of his nation's exit from the World Cup. If it were not for defensive coaching tactics and weak attacking play, he never would have been in that position in the first place.

Whoever Paraguay face in the quarter final will play a much more positive match and it might be Paraguay who ends up holding on.moreless

Well, this game went where no game has gone before: to a kickoff. The shootout was intense, and provided the kind of drama you might only be able to see on TNT (because they know drama.) With the US eliminated, the 2010 FIFA World Cup needs things like this to keep casual fans interested, and people are buzzing about this shootout.

Unfortunately, I was rooting for Japan and their goalkeeper was a complete moron here. He was brilliant during the first two halves, but here he forgot how to play goalie and now they are going back home.

Thanks for a fun game ESPN.moreless

  • TRIVIA (4)

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Paraguay Striker Lucas Barrios: To be fair we tried to play football for the whole 120 minutes, but we couldn't find the net. What's left at the end of the game, however, is a huge sense of joy for making the next round. It's really pleasing to be able to make history with this squad. The team's doing really well, we're very united and we can go further.

    • Japan Coach Takeshi Okada: Everything we've done during the tournament makes me feel really happy. This team has done Japan and all Asia proud. But, as far as today's defeat is concerned, I accept all the responsibility. As team coach I feel as we should have done more. [Keisuke] Honda was very isolated and that was my fault. If you want to win you have to score goals.

    • Paraguay Coach Gerardo Martino: It was a very tight game, though I think we had a slight edge on our opponents. We showed more heart than football and, in a game like this, that's enough. Other teams need to play more football to win. That said, we're not going to understate the value of being among the top eight teams in the world. ... We've not achieved our goals yet. Let's hope we can recover quickly and keep making history.
