And so the World Cup is finally under way. After all of the hype and all of the commercials (thousands a day that bombarded us while watching ESPN) the tourney is finally officially under way.

In the opening match the host country of South Africa faced the underrated Mexico. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, a bad sign of things to come for both teams in their groups. I will be watching a lot of soccer over the next month, but I have to say that I was not that impressed with this game. Just not an exciting start to the tourney.moreless

    • South Africa Midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala: Apart from the first 20 minutes I think we did well. This is the first World Cup for many of us and we should be pleased with ourselves. Maybe we missed a few chances but the good thing is that we created them in the first place. The rest is just a question of time. More goals will come.

    • Mexico Coach Javier Aguirre: I'm not happy with our performance today. We played really badly after their goal and we had to work extremely hard to get back into it.

    • South Africa Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira: Considering it was the opening Match, this is a good result for us. The pressure got to the boys to begin with but then they started to play the ball around and took control. This is going to be a tight group and anyone who gets four points will go through. That means we're still well in the race.
