The Republic of South Africa stunned the world by not laying down and forcing their opening opposition to a draw. Not a victory, but a moral victory at least. It was a good way to kick off the World Cup for the host country, but unfortunately that did not last long as they were beaten by Uruguay soundly here. This was the second most one-sided affair so far this cup, behind only Germany's victory over Australia.

All hope is not lost for South Africa, but they are just about as good as eliminated from this tournament with the loss here today.moreless

    • South Africa Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira: The 3-0 doesn't reflect the game. But Uruguay are a good team with good players, like Forlan. Their experience told at important moments. Our hopes are not over. We need to beat France, but we will have to be more aggressive. Everyone is very sad, but I told them it's not yet finished. I always said everything would be decided in the last round. I don't think we can stay behind the ball, wait for one mistake and hit on the break. This time I believe we have to risk and try to go to the next round.

    • Uruguay Coach Oscar Tabarez: We are convinced that we can win the World Cup. We don't have a lot of room to maneuver. We have to play very well each time. Winning this victory over the home team, the national squad, with all the fans behind them, this was not easy. This result has us happy and satisfied. The group is not over, but today we took an important step. I think that is the in the first half we could have done things better about the ball possession. In the second half we made better plays, and we controlled the game defensively. South Africa did not create a single goal situation because of our defensive system.

    • Uruguay Forward and Man of the Match Diego Forlan: All of us (forwards) like to score goals, but the important thing is to win. We tried it against France, but we faced a very tough opponent and we couldn't do it. Today, luckily, it was different. The team is feeling better and better, we had a solid collective effort and this victory gives us a lot of confidence. We are very happy.
