  • The Battle of the Iberian Peninsula - an Excellent Match and a Deserving Winner

Especially after the snoozer that was the first game of the day, I was expecting much from this match and it did not disappoint. Both teams generated chances and could have scored more goals. The Portuguese were definitely the ones more content to soak up pressure and the Spaniards played their usual ball possession game. In the end, Spain managed one breakthrough which turned out to be enough.

Spain is the co-favorite in the tournament and you could see why today. They shouldn't have too much trouble with Paraguay in the quarter final after which things will get considerably tougher. They will have to be in top form if they hope to repeat their Euro 2008 championship run, but they are capable. Not only that, they are a pleasure to watch!

Sorry Cristiano Ronaldo, looks like it is back to 30 minute abs for you as your team, Portugal, was sent home.

In the Isthmus Game, Spain vs. Portugal, Spain got the victory, just like they have been doing over Portugal since the 1500's (I blame the world for not actually being flat.)

The game was super competitive and as Alexi Lalas pointed out, Spain can be a very dangerous team in this cup for anyone. I just thought Portugal was better than them, but Spain was just matching them move for move and eventually got the goal, something Portugal could not do. But both teams deserve a round of applause.
