  • Terrific Match and Deserving Victors

Being Canadian, I am generally partial to North and South American sides as I like to see our part of the world do well, and do well South America has. All five nations qualified for the second round and four could go through (Brazil plays Chile so one will lose).

This was a terrific match except for the early part of the second half when Uruguay sat back in the driving rain in an attempt to protect a 1-0 lead. That didn't work as Korea equalized midway thorough the half, forcing the South American side out of their shell.

The winning goal was a thing of beauty, one of the best of the World Cup Finals so far. Suarez curled a shot off the inside of the post past a helpless Korean keeper. Up next for Uruguay is Ghana. I think they're going to be semi-finalists.moreless

    • Uruguay Striker Luis Suarez: What we're experiencing now is once-in-a-lifetime stuff. You always dream about the World Cup and today, fortunately for us, we kept the dream alive. They were playing the better football before they equalized. After they drew level they sat back a bit and that led to us scoring the second. And I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe that the ball was on its way into the net.

    • Korea Republic Coach Huh Jung-Moo: There are some things we need to improve to compete at international level. It's good to play against opponents from other continents and take part in tournaments on foreign soil. Uruguay have some very good individuals. The result didn't go the way we wanted but my players gave their all. ... We played very well but we ought to have played a bit more intelligently. ... I want to take this opportunity to congratulate them as well as thanking all the supporters who cheered us on.

    • Uruguay Coach Oscar Tabarez: Korea played a great game, but that slice of luck went our way, not theirs this time – that's football. It was a very hard-fought victory that took a lot out of us. The team's solidity and cohesion really came to the fore late on.
