  • I just love training episodes.

Ippo was given the task to catch ten leaves using jabs. Takamura solely gave him such tough conditions because he knew a kid like him with little to no confidence, is unable to succeed in boxing. Though he underestimated Ippo's ability to be succeed and change. He practiced everyday, even during school hours, and even forgetting to help his mom out with the business. While he was able to grab five leaves in a row, only a day remained, and he still couldn't do it. That's when he discovered a small little tidbit, and thanks to this, he was able to grab ten leaves with ease. Takamura was impressed, and brought him over to the boxing gym. The owner was rather displeased with Takamura's recruiting skills, and decided to pit him against a boxer who'll eventually become the franchise fight for the gym.

What I really love the most about shounens is the episodes when the main character works hard in order to become stronger. This is personally one of my more favourite development episodes. I personally find these training sequences to be equally as great as character development ones. It's as if the training itself is character development. Just seeing Ippo work so hard into trying to catch that second leaf he's been working almost a week on, was a really rewarding sight. It was great how he discovered a technique in boxing that allowed him catch all ten leaves with ease, which was a selling point in Takamura accepting him as a boxer. There's some humour to be found to. I was literally cracking up when the owner of the boxing gym looked at Ippo, said there was no fighting spirit within him, and all you see is Ippo happily saying hi to everyone.moreless
