Twelve years later, two children, Ai and Yu, set off on a journey to find their lost parents, who went to the world connected with the pillar, but haven't come back. Boarding a ghost train, they discover a mysterious woman named Lisa Pacifist who is on-board for her own mysterious reasons. The group arrives in the new world, Wonderland, and discovers a strange world that appears normal at first, but turns out to be populated by bizarre plants and insects. Erupting without warning to shatter the tranquility of the Japanese nightlife, an ominous pillar of darkness descends from the heavens. Two fearsome creatures soon emerge from the dark column, and proceed to annihilate the warships and attack aircraft that come to greet their arrival, before proceeding to do each other in as well. Watching the transpiring events in amazement are Mary and Joe Hayakawa, two research scientists who would later make the first trip to the world beyond the pillar, which would soon come to be known as Wonderland. A second trip would lead to their mysterious disappearance, and the catalyst for our current adventure to begin.

The twin Hayakawa children, Ai and Yu, seek out the hidden subway that leads to the mystifying world that lies beyond the dark column, in hopes of finding the whereabouts of their missing parents. Joining them on their journey is a woman named Lisa, who the twins encountered upon boarding the imposing subway train. Will their journey to Wonderland in search of their missing parents bear fruit? And what of this mysterious man in the black cloak, wielding tremendous power, and summoning great creatures on his solitary quest against the tyranny that grips this strange new land?moreless
  • Not great for the start of a series

“The journey into darkness” is the first episode of Final Fantasy Unlimited. And I have to say I was disappointed. But that’s enough criticism- I may not like the show but I am trying to review it positively. The opening sequence of this episode is good because we see the parents of the 2 main characters- we can clearly see that they are scientists. Suddenly some 2 dragon like creatures appear, they are nicely animated, and they start to battle each other. The main credits come up, and we have a nice cheery opening song. The episode continues as 2 girls’ board a subway hoping to be taken to the “inner world”- I don’t really get how this happens, but… Anyhow they get to the inner world and meet some guy. A fairly crap monster- a big eyeball with legs- shows up and the guy gets his gun- which is on the end of his arm- and “chooses the soil” which then summons a phoenix that destroys they eyeball man. End of episode. I cant really say anything that great about this episode, the story reminds me of Alice in wonderland, and the monster was crap, but the positive side- there was some nice animation and the music at the end of the episode was good. Not great for the start of a series. 4/ 10

    • Fabula: Final Fantasy: Unlimited. Here is my prophecy. His name is Kaze. He is a mystery, a destroyer. A man with a single-minded mission. Those would thwart him will be defeated with the power of soil. "Magun, Man of the Black Wind." Next time, you'll have my Unlimited guidance.

    • (A chocobo chomps on Ai's hair, tosses her playfully around and then runs off.)

      Chocobo: Kweh! Kweh! Kweh!
      Lisa: Are you okay, Ai?
Ai: (whose eyes are spinning) Look at the pretty stars.
Yu: (gasps) Maybe that was one of those birds of happiness that live in Wonderland. See? Like in the book that Mom and Dad wrote. Mr. Birdy, come back!

    • Lisa: Who are you? A couple of ghosts that live on this train?
Ai: You're the one who's a ghost here!
Yu: Cut it out already, sis.

    • Yu: So, hey, sis, aren't you even scared?
Ai: We're going to look for Mom and Dad, you know. There's no time to be scared right now.

    • Kaze: It has moved. Soil is my power! The Magun has thawed!
      Yu: Magun?
Kaze: The soil charge triad to use on you has been decided! The origin of all things, Mother Black!
      Ai: Dirt gun?
Kaze: The heat that will scorch all creation, Fire Red! And finally, the critical point of everything, Burning Gold! Burn up!
      Lisa: What an amazing energy.
      Kaze: I summon you, Phoenix!

    • Fabula: Good invited guests, do come in. Welcome to the night of Wonderland. I am Fabula. The Conjunction, yes! Twelve years ago, that was the day when the Pillar of the Darkness of Chaos first appeared. But now, a new journey, a new wandering is about to begin. A wandering in a new place... Wonderland.

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Kaze summons Phoenix in this episode. Phoenix first appeared as a summon creature in Final Fantasy V, which was originally released for SNES and was later reissued as part of an anthology for the Sony Playstation. Phoenix was also featured in Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII and IX. Considered one of the more useful summons of the series, it provided a strong fire-elemental attack and fully revived any KOed characters. In mythology, the phoenix was a legendary bird that burst into flames when it was time for it to die and then was reborn from the ashes.
