EDIT
Susan Wilson / Carol Sievers / Autumn Skeen
AIRED:
Among the compelling stories in the opener is that of Susan Wilson, who discovered a neighbor was secretly videotaping her in her Louisiana home. The neighbor, Steve Glover, was a high positioned person in their church, and was the one that got them the house they moved into. Since the state had no laws to convict the man for videotaping Susan and her husband Gary in their own home, Susan fell into a deep depression and began to shower with her clothes on. When Steve basically received a slap on the wrist for his actions, she publicly petitioned for a video-voyeur bill. Even though Steve never spent a day in jail, she did get the video-voyeur lawyer passed. Now it is against the law to do what Steve Glover did to Susan Wilson. The hour also spotlights Carol Sievers, who fought for justice after her daughter was raped and murdered. The first suspect they picked up failed the DNA test and was released from custody. Carol was more determined than ever to find her daughter's killer. If DNA tests good get one person off on the charges, then, Carol reasoned, DNA could find the killer. The only problem was DNA was still in its very early stages. Carol began pushing and lobbying for cross-checking of known sex offenders, so she could find her daughter's killer. Soon they found the killer through DNA testing. Carol then lobbied for an improved DNA database after he was convicted. Autumn Skeen and her husband, Tom, who lived in Tokyo, lost their 4-year-old son, Anton, in a car accident. Autumn and Anton were in America and visiting relatives. Autumn secured Anton in the SUV (which a family member suggested she take), and while driving at about 65 mph, she was passing a semi and reached for the radio, then a gust of wind hit them and the SUV flipped several times. Autumn was seriously injured. She soon found out that her son had been ejected from the car, and killed. Tom left Tokyo and went to be with Autumn. Autumn knew she had secured Anton in, and was determined to find out what went wrong. She returned to Tokyo try to hold her family together - she still had one child living. After she did some research she found that up to 500 children die a year due to auto accidents. She decided she had to change the inadequate child safety laws. The Skeen family moved back to the United States for good in the summer of 1998, that fall she tracked down a organization called National Safe Kids. Autumn proposed a law for children up to eight years old. She was stunned when some politicians diasgreed with the proposed law. In February 2000, nearly four years after Anton's death, the law was voted for, but it was changed slightly - applying to children up to six years old. In November 2002, the US passed a National law called Anton's Law to make it safer for children in automobiles.moreless
