Episode Summary

Terry Reynolds, longtime assistant to Gwen Leonard, creative executive at a Manhattan marketing and promotions firm, announces to Gwen that she's been let go from her job. The self-centered Gwen's reaction is predictable: she wonders how this will affect her. But she soon finds out that she's a victim of the same corporate downsizing. A few months later, Gwen shows up at the SoHo loft where Terry lives with her brother Danny, an aspiring writer who works at the bar downstairs run by Guy Mann. Without Terry to look after her finances, Gwen has spent all her money and has run up unpayable debts, resulting in her being kicked out of her high-priced condo. Desperate, she pleads with Terry to let her stay with her until she can get back on her feet. Part of that effort includes filing for unemployment benefits, where Gwen is confronted with the unsympathetic civil servant Mrs. Francis. Later Gwen tells Terry that their talents compliment each other and that they should go into business for themselves. Terry's first instinct is to reject this idea, but her own recent employment, including phone solicitation for a retail meat company and designing dresses for Guy's cross-dressing son Ashley, leads her to reconsider. Terry states firmly that if this venture is to be, they must be equal partners and that her days as Gwen's gofer are over. Gwen has no choice but to agree.moreless

    • TRIVIA (0)

    • QUOTES (5)

    • NOTES (5)

      • The joke about Gwen's planned promotion that would drop penguins out of an airplane is reminiscent of the Turkeys Away episode of the series WKRP in Cincinnati, which involved live turkeys being dropped out of a plane as a Thankgiving promotion. Neither bird can fly, of course.

      • Like many other shows, repeats of Fired Up are often trimmed by a few minutes to allow more commercials to be shown. The footage containing guest star Carol Ann Susi (Meat Seling Woman) is one of the casualties.

      • Terry gives her address as 671 Duwayne St. #406.

      • Gwen's salary at her old job was $2200 a week.

      • Gwen tells Mrs. Francis that her last name is pronounced "leh-NAHRD."

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • Ashley: Fasten your seat belts; it's going to be a bumpy night!
Drag queen Ashley quotes the famous line spoken by Bette Davis in the classic film All About Eve (1950).

      • Terry: Here you a table at the Four Seasons for lunch...
The Four Seasons is one of New York's premiere restaurants, located on 52nd Stret between Park and Lexington. It opened in 1959 and was designed in by world-renowned architects Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson
