One of the candles on the birthday cake goes from being lit to not lit depending on the camera angle.
Trivia: The dress that Kaylee is wearing in the flashback is the same dress she wears on her date with Simon in the episode "The Message".
In one of the DVD commentaries for Firefly, it's explained that Zoe wears her leather necklace as a sort of wedding ring, symbolizing her marriage to Wash. But, she's wearing the same necklace during the flashback shots in this episode. Why is she wearing it if she's not married to Wash yet?
At least in our time, injecting a big needle of adrenaline into someone with a stomach wound will almost certainly result in one very dead patient.
Mal: (about Serenity) Try to see past what she is, on to what she can be.
Zoe: What's that, sir?
Zoe: No, I meant... (pointing) ...what's that?
Mal: Oh. Just step around it. I think something must have been living in here.
Kaylee: Sometimes a thing gets broke, can't be fixed.
Jayne: Hey, what do you think you're doing? Fighting at a time like this! You'll use up all the air.
Mal: I tell you, Zoe, we get a mechanic, get her up and running again, hire a good pilot, maybe a cook...live like real people. A small crew - them's as feel a need to be free. Take jobs as they come. Ain't never have to be under the heel of nobody never again. No matter how long the arm of the Alliance might get, we'll just get ourselves a little further.
Zoe: (pause) Get her running again?
Zoe: So, not running now?
Mal: Not so much.
Mal: You're all gonna be here when I wake up?
Book: We'll be here.
Mal: Good. That's good...
River: Don't be afraid. That's what it says: "Don't be afraid."
Shepherd Book: Yes.
River: But you are afraid.
Shepherd Book: Yes.
River: You're afraid we're going to run out of air, that we'll die gasping. But we won't. That's not going to happen. (pause) We'll freeze to death first.
River: "Day" is a vestigial mode of time measurement based on solar cycles. It's not applicable...I didn't get you anything.
Kaylee: It's your turn.
Simon: My turn?
Kaylee: Well, Shepherd told us a funny story about being a preacher. Now you tell us a funny story about being a doctor.
Simon: Oh, a funny story.
Jayne: Yeah, 'cause sick people are hi-larious.
Simon: I always thought the name Serenity had a vaguely funereal sound to it.
(Kaylee gives Simon a birthday cake)
Simon: I'm very deeply moved. Thank you.
Jayne: Well, deeply move yourself to blow out them candles, so we can try a slice.
Wash: Monastic humor. I miss out on all the fun.
Wash: Yes Mal, it would boost the signal, but even if some passerby did happen to receive all it would do is muck up
Mal: Could be that's true.
Wash: Damn right, it's true. They'd be force to stop and dig out our signal before they could even go anyplace. (pause) Well, maybe I should do that, then!
Mal: Maybe you should!
Jayne: Hey, you know, we'd have been back first but there's something wrong with Inara's shuttle. She did something to it, Mal - it smells funny.
Inara: I told you, that's incense.
Jayne: That's what you say.
Jayne: Tell us where the stuff is so I can shoot you.
Mal: Point of interest. Offering to shoot us might not work so well as an incentive as you might imagine.
Mal: Looks can be deceiving.
Jayne: Not as deceiving as a low down, dirty deceiver.
Mal: Well said. Wasn't that well said, Zoe?
Zoe: It had a kinda poetry to it.
Mal: Which one you figured tracked us?
Zoe: The ugly one, sir.
Mal: Could you be more specific?
Inara: Mal, you don't have to die alone.
Mal: Everybody dies alone.
Mal: I need that in Captain Dummy mode, Kaylee.
Kaylee: We're dead in the water.
Mal: Ship like this, be with you until the day you die.
Zoe: That's because it's a deathtrap.
Jayne: Now, Inara - she's gotta have some real funny whorin' stories, I'd wager.
Inara: Oh, do I ever! Funny and sexy! You have no idea! And you never will. I don't discuss my clients.
Jayne: Awww, come on 'nara. Who'd know?
Inara: You. Anyway, a Companion doesn't kiss and tell.
Mal: So there is kissing?
When Mal is talking to the crew about their leaving on the shuttles he reaches up and touches Serenity. This was improvised by Nathan Fillion.
The button which Mal is supposed to hit to call back the shuttles once the part has arrived was stolen by Alan Tudyk (Wash) and sent to Joss Whedon when the show was cancelled with a note saying 'When your miracle gets here, call us back".
Gina Torres spent much of the episode unconscious because in real life she was off getting married.
Mal narrates the pre-credit opening rather than Book.
The introduction at the beginning of the show in this episode is somewhat different from the normal introduction, but close-captioning displayed the words for the normal introduction.
