  • Amanda tries to write an essay about her husband, "His Name Is Jason," for a contest. Her trials at home and school are overcome when the winner of the contest is her husband's own essay, "Her Name Is Amanda."moreless

I've remembered parts of this half-hour drama, even to bits of dialogue, for 55 years. Gertrude Michael was superb as Amanda. She agonized over trying to find the right words to express her love of Jason, writing "His name is Jason, and I love him. He's got a mess of hurt inside." Sensing wrongness, she reads the dictionary definition of "mess," "...a hodge-podge," and weeps at her own ignorance. When she tries, in another scene, to read Shakespeare's "Quality of Mercy" speech in class, the children laugh at her, whereupon she tells them what the speech means to her, and wins their silence and their respect. John Warburton was equally fine as her tortured husband. The reading of his essay at the end of the show signifies a reconciliation between them. For years I've tried to discover what series this was on, and just found it here. There are a few lost gems from early anthology television, and this was one of those. I'd give a good deal to be able to see it again, just to find out if my memory serves me well.moreless
