  • In 18th-century England, a simple-minded villager has seen ghosts on the road in the woods. But there isn't a road in the woods...

Nigel Kneale, creator of "Quatermass" and the first of the great British TV scriptwriters, had one of his finest hours with this extremely clever play, in which superstition and rationality both seem powerless against intimations of dread so strong that they take a physical form - what some might call "ghosts", and others an example of clairvoyance. The revelation that the ghosts in the wood are beings, not from the past, but the distant future - our own time - comes as a hammer blow, and the unspecified disaster they are fleeing seems likely to be some sort of nuclear catastrophe. This play may be lost, like so much BBC drama; a great pity, for it was brilliant.moreless
