Maggie Scott and daughter Hannah travel to Australia looking to meet up with her husband, who is trying his luck in the gold fields. Texan Con Madigan is travelling on the same ship. He and Australian business partner Jack Taylor will set up a coach line.
I thought this was a bloody brilliant episode, especially as a pilot. It introduced me to Five Mile Creek, and did a lovely job at that. It has always remained one of my favorites for its simpleness; the strife between Jack and Maggie, the competetion and uneast friendship between business partners Madigan and Taylor; and the beginning of a wonderful relationship between Maggie and Kate. Paddy Malone presensted a wonderfully charming character, and little Hannah is quite darling. I especially liked the scene when the bushrangers attack the women at Five Mile Creek, and with Paddy Malone, are able to fend off the bushrangers. It did not feature either Sam or Ben, which I think helped it flow, by simplifying its introduction. It was a pure episode, in a sense, because it was without the complicated strife of all the others, between Ben and Paddy, and the constant chaos of Sam on everybody's lives. The acting is incredible, and this episode served as a wonderful introduction to a brilliant TV show, and has captured my attention since I was but a little boy watching this volume on VHS till now.
