Flamingo Road

Show Summary

Flamingo Road was NBC's first attempt to jump into the prime time soap opera craze that was gaining momentum in the early 1980s, thanks in large part to Dallas.

Flamingo Road was also set in the South in the fictional, yet well-to-do community of Truro County, Florida. The town was run by the corrupt and powerful sheriff, Titus Semple, who made it his point to know everyone's business. The original storyline centered around a triangle between ambitious politician Fielding Carlyle, his beautiful and scheming political wife Constance and his true love, singer Lane Ballou.

Flamingo Road originally aired as a made for television movie in May 1980 and debuted as a regular series in January 1981, one week before Dynasty premiered. However, Flamingo Road never enjoyed the ratings success of Dallas or Dynasty and was canceled after only two seasons.

The TV series was based on the novel by Robert Wilder, which was also made into a 1949 motion picture starring Joan Crawford.

Flamingo Road began when Dallas was at the height of its popularity and started shortly before Falcon Crest and Dynasty. Unfortunately it was far less successful than those shows. It certainly had its share of melodrama but I think the problem was that the writing was poor and the acting, despite a strong cast, was not spectacular. Many thought the show improved when David Selby came aboard in season 2, but I actually think the show was better before he came on. Noo offense to Mr. Selby who is a fine actor, I just didn't care for that character. That being said, I was still addicted to the show and was sorry to see it cancelled after a year and a half run.moreless
