Though now Victor Garber is the "evil" one.

Flashpoint has become a huge success in Canada and tonight was awarded the coveted post-Super Bowl timeslot in the Great North. Now, as happy as I am for that, they did not have the right episode here. This was a good episode, it gave you an idea of the characters, but it did not show what Flashpoint is about and that is high-octane action and very climatic crises. They should have had a hold-up at a bank, a crazed gunman in a mall, something that kept viewers on the edge of their seats and got them to say, "Wow, this is a good show!" I am not sure if this episode has done that. The ending was good, but was it suspenseful enough to keep fans coming back in a few months?moreless
  • Wow, what an episode!!!

    10
Excellent episode, under every point of view. Not completely new, not an original formula, but a winning one nonetheless. I hope somebody remembers one of the best episodes of Without a trace, titled "Are you now or have you ever been". Like I said, same formula - somebody coming to examine the team, digging into their personal lives, trying to set them up in some way ... past stories, flashbacks, relationships. This structure always has wonderful results and this episode is no exception.

All the actors are at their best here, but the winner is Ed Lane/Hugh Dillon and not for the first time. His ice-blue eyes speak volumes about his feelings, he's sharp, angry, rageous, anxious, all this beside his usual toughness. Absolutely great and with a breath-taking finale. I'm looking forward to discovering what's going on.moreless
  • A 'routine' re-qualification quickly turns into a nightmare for the members of Team One when a military shrink is brought in to conduct the psych evaluations.

'Fault Lines' beautifully recaps the past 2 years of the members of Team One. The temptation is there to label this episode a 'clip' episode. While previous episodes are indeed referenced here, 'Fault Lines' is so much more than a stroll down memory lane.

    EPISODE SPOILERS AHEAD

The episode opens with Ed pulling up the SRU HQ, looking like he's got much weighing on his mind. This is no surprise; Sophie, facing a difficult pregnancy, who'd moved out with Clark to stay with her mom, had issued Ed an ultimatum: Family or SRU. Choose one or the other. (Yikes.)

Today is supposed to be the day scheduled for the annual re-qualification/psych evaluation. We understand that Greg, as Team Sergeant, normally does the psych evals... this time, there is to be an outsider.

When Team One finds out who it is, panic sets in. It is Larry Toth, a military psychologist with the reputation of being a 'team breaker'.

While Team Three's Donna Sabine (previously seen in season two episode 'Remote Control') takes Team One through their paces, individual members go before Dr. Toth, played with all sorts of malevolent charm by veteran actor, Victor Garber. Wordy, Spike, Jules and Sam are fairly raked over the coals, as potential medical conditions, traumatic events, and risky liaisons are explored and brought to the fore.

When Ed's turn arrives, he's already on edge, because he's received a frantic call from Sophie informing him that she's gone into labour. But unless Ed gets this evaluation over with today, the whole team will be sidelined. Team One can't seem to figure out the why and the who behind Toth's presence. Commander Holleran had already adamantly denied being the one to bring him in, and when Greg finally reveals he was the one to request the outsider, Ed has had enough. Greg pleads his case: he didn't trust himself to be objective enough when it came to his team. Toth agrees. He sees 'fault lines' running throughout the entire team. Ed stalks out of the evaluation and leaves his weapon on the table, stating he's got a baby to meet. At this point, you can tell Ed is feeling utterly betrayed by Greg, and the rest of the team is reeling because they know things look grim for their future as a 6-member unit. Ed, en route to the hospital, talks to Sophie as he weaves in and out of traffic. Unfortunately, there's a jerk driving a Porsche Cayenne ahead of him. (Can you say 'road rage'?)

Porsche-Jerk cuts Ed off, then pulls right in front of him at a traffic light. When the light turns green, Porsche-Jerk refuses to move. Ed, frantic to get to Sophie, leans on his horn, then eventually gets out and demands the idiot move. Porsche-Jerk gets out too, sees Ed's uniform and looks like he's going to comply. Instead, he reaches into his vehicle and comes out with a handgun. Ed reaches for his sidearm and - oops - remembers he left it back at HQ. He raises his arms and tries to talk the jerk down...

Luck does not appear to be on Ed's side, as Porsche-Jerk aims and fires.

Screen goes black, and we're told the story is 'To Be Continued' this Summer.moreless
