One of television's best shows returned tonight after months off the air and delivered a strong episode. Not exactly one of the most memorable episodes, no thrilling hostage crisis or anything, but this was more about showing these officers as real people than anything else and they really did establish that tonight. We saw they are human and that they are a team, but what they do best is go out in the field. I have a feeling next week will be back to giving us a crazy emergency that they need to respond to.

The show is not as big in the US as it is in Canada, but at least this viewer can appreciate a show about cops that has heart and is actually well-written.moreless
  • After being sent home following the brutal 'routine' psych evaluation, Team One gets recalled after Ed's shooting. SPOILERS.

    10
'Personal Effects' seamlessly follows up 'Fault Lines', the massively shocking episode that saw the whole team being ripped to shreds by military psychologist, Dr. Larry Toth (Victor Garber).

Ed had been more than upset at Greg for bringing in this outsider to grill them, and stalked out of the evaluation to be with his wife, Sophie, who has gone into labor. Along the way, Ed is shot by a guy in an apparent case of road rage.

Turns out the guy has many reasons to be upset. With the help of Donna Sabine's Team Three, Team One investigates and tries to get to the bottom of what has happened to Ed, and what turns out to be a related shooting at a nearby military base.

This episode was a brilliant opening to what is clearly going to be a roller-coaster ride of a season. While we know Ed, Sophie and baby are okay, we still don't know the status of Wordy or Spike, or if Jules and Sam will jeopardize their careers to pursue a clandestine relationship again. I sense an episode where that 'priority of life code' gets put to the test with these two... 10 out of 10 for brilliant writing, performances, directing, action and emotion.moreless
  • A Fine Start to the New Season

    9.0
I really enjoyed the season premiere. There was lots of resolution from the Season 3 finale and a well-produced inter-connection of several storylines, allowing us to see growth and some closure for each member of Team One.

We learned what happened to Ed and the story behind his shooter's actions, Sgt. Parker took care of his 'unfinished business', Sophie's complicated pregnancy came to a conclusion, Ed makes a super-human effort to keep a promise to his wife, Sam and Jules made a decision about their relationship, Spike comes to terms with his father's unwillingness to accept his career, Kevin shares something with his wife and Dr. Toth's work with Team 1 came to a conclusion. It's a very nice way to lay the stage for the season to come.

I was also happy to see Jessica Steen back. I hope they keep her around as I like her character.moreless
