  • A Terrific Episode

I really enjoyed this installment of Flashpoint. For whatever reason, I've seen a few different shows on the general theme of being able to easily empathize with the 'bad guy' lately and this one is at the top of the list.

I believe that the law must be upheld and that Dad needs to go to jail for a time, although I would hope that it is for a shorter time than whatever the standard kidnapping sentence is. He did kidnap, beat and hold a man at gunpoint and that's never right.

I do think it's unconscionable for a man to not step up and offer his blood for testing to save the life of his own son. He fathered a child and he needs to own those actions and do what is right. I'm not sure why Ava would not have told him that she was pregnant by him, since she was clearly enamored with him.

I think the biggest lesson is to not judge another person by what they do when we don't know their story. We live a culture that judges everything almost automatically and shows like this hopefully give us pause, and that is a good thing.moreless
  • How do they do that?

On many occasions Flashpoint has been able to make me sympathetic to the "bad guy" and think the "victim" is about as low as you can go on the food chain. Certainly tonight that is the case.

Not that one can defend the offenses committed. Laws are there for a reason and if ineffective they should be changed, not broken. But the motivation; the angst behind the actions and the helplessness of the parents certainly make it easy to empathize with them. Erin Karpluk was fairly decent as the Mom at her wit's end. Certainly better than she is on her own series, Being Erica. Not a fan.

But she was outshone by the actor-who-shall-go-nameless until I find him(!) who played her husband, and adoptive father to her terminally ill son.

And kudos to Jules (played by Amy Jo Johnson)! Even though her spouting off at the mouth to the "victim" is not likely to happen in real life...its one of those things that give the feel-good moments in TV.moreless

    5.5
Flashpoint went for an emotional episode here tonight, but it just did not deliver at all in the mind of this reviewer. They had Jules have a breakdown here and get emotionally invested in the case, and they had it at a hospital, they tried a lot of stuff here, but they just did not get the job done in my mind, and this is usually a show that knocks it out of the park when they go for the overly emotional episode.

Not as horrible as my 5.5 may seem, but if you compare this to most Flashpoint episodes, calling it beyond sub-par would be an understatement.moreless
