Episode Summary

Brittle Bullet
It’s Naota and Haruko Vs. Kamon and Canti in a battle with airsoft guns. As this “deadly” fight wages on, Kamon challenges Naota to a duel! The winner is left undetermined, as some of Naota’s friends interrupt the duel and talk to him about how he saved the city from the satellite the other day. This causes the power to get to his head and he begins to act manly. This disgusts Mamimi and the others. To make matters worse, another Medical Mechanica comes out to threaten the city. Will Naota handle the situation as calmly as did the last time? Or, will his over-inflated ego get in the way?moreless

  • FLCL Episode #5 - "Brittle Bullet"/"Bura-Bure"

"Brittle Bullet" is the fifth episode in the series "FLCL" and is probably the craziest episode in the series, as well as possibly the most purely entertaining. Like "Full Swing" before it, "Brittle Bullet" goes further into the series' overall plot, something that the first half of "FLCL" did not do. It even introduces a character that plays a major role in the series. "Brittle Bullet" centralizes around action films and guns (shooter films), with many references made to the shoot-em-up genre. In addition, it focuses on why Haruko is here and what she and the introduced character have to do with each other. Considered (along with the sixth episode, "FLCLimax") to be the best episode in an excellent series.

  • After getting kissed by Haruko, Kamon challenges his son to a duel for Haruko. Then, Naota's classmates come and talk about how he saved the city. He starts to act manly, and even gets pushed away by Mamimi. Then, another robot appears. Can Naota save themoreless

Wow. This episode is violent and amazing. I mean, the Matrix fight with Haruko and Amarao was great. I was really amazed and almost jumped out of my seat. And how Amarao lost his eyebrows was classic. One of the best episodes of the show. What really makes me sad is that Mamimi rejected Naota after he actually wanted to kiss her.

She said that he likes Haruko, but he kept saying he didn't. Mamimi didn't want Naota anymore, because he's changed. That's very sad though.

Also, Mamimi said that she doesn't care what happens to the planet, and yet she saved Mabase with Naota. Isn't that sweet?

Overall, a very excellent episode that deserves a lot more credit than it deserves.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Though both Haruko and Amarao refer to Atomsk's instrument/weapon as "Atomsk's Gibson EB-0... 1961 model", it looks a lot closer to the Epiphone EB-0 that's sold today.

    • If you look carefully at the beginning of the episode when Kamon is screaming (after witnessing Naota accidentally kissing Haruko), you will see a tiny imp holding a pitchfork deep in the back of his teeth.

  • QUOTES (19)

    • Naota: It's dangerous to go waving that thing around.

Haruko: Use your guitar more time, Takkun. Ka-king! You did it so great last time.

      Naota: ...Not interested.

Haruko: (Giggles.) I should teach you how to be a man, Takkun.

    • Haruko: (flying on guitar) Daicon Five! Yeah! (starts firing at robot with slingshot)

    • (Haruko and Naota are on the vespa)
Haruko: So, you usually don't come out to the beach like this?
Naota: Not in October. It's too cold! AHH!
(He almost falls off the vespa)
Naota: Hey, thats dangerous! Your driving sucks!
Haruko: Im a very safe driver!
(Haruko steers all over the road)

    • {flailing in the water)
Amarao: Robots are different then Cyborgs

    • Kitsubarami: What else do you call a robot? (fires gun) Cyborg!
Haruko: (while swinging her guitar at the missiles): Cyborg my butt!
      (Missile flings back at Kitsubarami)
Mamimi: Actually, confusing cyborgs with robots is a common mistake.

    • Ninamori: You think their actually going out?
Masashi: What? She's his brother's girlfriend. What's his name, Tasku? He's a baseball player.
Gaki: But, that other one likes Naota too, the kiss-kiss girl!

    • Naota: Why don't you put on some clothes? Is there someone here?
Haruko (while dressed like and impersonating Elvis): How's this?
Naota: Uh, I meant normal clothes.
Haruko (no longer impersonating Elvis): Haruko's mastered the guitar in one millisecond class! Yeah, sign up now!
Naota: Do you find this difficult to understand?
(Haruko blasts Naota with an airsoft Uzi)
Haruko: Grab a guitar and you can be a pop idol! Chicks dig it, dude, pion!
      Naota: Pion?
Haruko: Like Filter or Slash, like Red Hot Chili Peppers or Rage Against the Machine, or Richard Cheese!
Naota: There's one that doesn't fit the list, you know.
(Haruko shoots Naota with an airsoft Uzi again)
Haruko: You have to say it like a cool rock dude pion. Jimi Hendrix and McCartney both started out like this. (She begins to strum her bass guitar, which flies around like a helicopter blade) Yeah, pion!
Naota: Haruko, what are you doing?
      (Haruko flies into Naota)

    • Haruko (angrily): You are a million years under-evolved, you primitive monkey!
Amarao: That's discriminatory language used against undeveloped planets!

    • Kamon: Hey, hey, what's the matter with my poor little son?
(Haruko, as a snake, wraps around Naota)
      Haruko: Yum, yum.
Naota: Ah, what are you doing? Gees!
      Haruko: Yum, yum!
Kamon: If you're just going to run and hide, like a scared rabbit, then your dear old dad is gonna have to take poor Huko-san away!
(Haruko begins making out with Naota)
Haruko: Oh no, Ta-kun, save me, save me!
      Naota: Get off of me!
Kamon: Ahh! (He begins to shoot at Haruko and Naota)

    • (A giant gun battle with Haruko and Amarao's men)
      Haruko: Too easy!
(All of Amarao's men get shot)
      Amarao: You can't be real...

    • (Haruko picks her nose)
Naota: What are you doing, you're supposed to be helping me!
Haruko: But my guitar's not plugged in.
Naota: Why'd you bring that?! Are you crazy?! This is war! Jeez!
Haruko: It's screechy, and bungee, and grungey! We're in trouble, G.

    • (Haruko and Naota make out, while Kamon watches)
Haruko: Yeah, Ta-Kun, that's more like it!
Naota: No, the horror, it's the horror!
Haruko: Luku, luku, my first kiss!
Naota: Liar, you've already done it plenty of times and you know it!

    • (On the television in the show)
Man One: Brother! I'm a runaway bullet train, after all!
Man Two: You can't die now! Huh, what are all these pigeons doing here?

    • Amarao: I'm not a child anymore, I'm an adult. I can buy my own insurance and everything!

    • Naota: What's the matter? I thought you liked me too, I know you do!

    • Mamimi: Ta-kun, you know you're not supposed to do things like this with me.
      Naota: Why not? We're here.

    • Naota: How can I like someone insane?

    • Mamimi: There under your hood, is it Furi Kuri again?
      Naota: Huh, aww.
Mamimi: Your really too amazing Ta-Kun, you drink the pulp now and you do Furi Kuri and you do googly googly and drooly drooly. When did you start to change and grow up and everything Ta-Kun?

    • Naota: Another thing, my name is Naota! Don't ever call me Ta-Kun again!

    • The guns Naota, Canti, and Kamon use are airsoft guns and they are the rage in Japan since citizens can't legally own guns.

    • In the Japanese version, when Kitsubarami is shooting at Canti, she makes a comment on how you put the Japanese characters for "blue" and "fish" together to get saba, the Japanese word for mackerel. As Mamimi points out, this isn't entirely accurate, as one of the characters used in saba only looks like the character for "blue".

  • ALLUSIONS (13)

    • Seven of Nine
In the English version, Kitsurubami mentions Seven of Nine while shooting. Seven of Nine is a character from Star Trek: Voyager, a Borg released from the collective.

    • The Castle of Cagliostro:
In the Japanese version the quote: "Heh. Do you prefer the blue jacket from the first series, or Castle Cagliostro?" is a reference to the movie "The Castle of Cagliostro," which was Directed by the known Hayao Miyazaki.

    • The guitar that Haruko and Amarao see in Atomisk's hand resembles the same shape of a guitar shown in music duo Daft Punk's anime movie: Interstella 5555.

    • In the beginning of the episode, Haruko keeps talking about what happens if you become a pop idol. This could be a direct reference to the British show Pop Idol, which of course is the one that started the revolution of American Idol. The premise of the show is common people auditioning to become famous singers.

    • During one of the scenes, Amarao is seen in the visual style of the animated series South Park, complete with talking in a quicker style and the side-characters also had facial expressions similar to those used in South Park. Likewise, a character that looks similar to Eric Cartman can be seen sitting on a chair next to Amarao during the aforementioned scene.

    • This episode mentioned some American bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, Richard Cheese, Rage Against the Machine, The Beatles, Filter and Paul McCartney.

    • The scene where Haruko fights several men in the salon mimics the work of John Woo.

    • This episode makes reference to Block Buster Video, which is a movie and game rental outlet.

    • When Naota is talking to Mamimi by the river after the battle is over, his face looks like Kenny's from South Park.

    • When Haruko is fighting all the men in black and she dodges the bullets, she does so in a style that pays homage to the Wachowski Brothers' 1999 action/sci-fi film, The Matrix.

    • When Haruko and Naota are going to defeat the alien, Haruko's outfit looks similar to that of the Playboy Bunny; though it's actually more similar to the Daicon mascot, first appearing at the Daicon conventions. It also looks similar to Haruhi Suzumiya's bunny outfit from The Melancholoy of Haruhi Suzumiya, especially when she is holding the guitar.

    • The beginning of the episode mostly makes fun of Lupin III. This includes Kamon's clothes, the lettering that names the episode, Kamon mentioning, Castle of Cagliostro (which happens to be a Lupin movie), and Kamon going after a partially-naked Haruko as a spring loaded fist comes out of her.

    • Haruko: Furi-kuri Furi-kura!
This is a reference to Magical Girl anime. When magical girls twirl their rod and say their catch phrase, things get sparkly and they turn into the heroine. Haruko's phrase happens to be the title of the last episode.
