I wuz juss thinking...the kid didn't have a mom. Does anyone think thats a sign why Naota rejects women in the begginning? Its just strange to me that, the whole mom thing was never explained

    Divorce, I'd say.

and no Naota dosn't reject Mamimi because of anything like not having a mother but because she used to be his older brother's girlfriend and just messes with him cause he seems about as the only "family" she has now.

Maybe she went with Tasuku (Naota's brother) to the US, because if he's about the same age as Mamimi (17), he would probably need some help getting around, unless he knows English. Or maybe both of Naota's and Tasuku's parents died, and Kamon is their adoptive father, but he said he "named Naota for honesty," so that's pretty much ruled out.

Sorry for double- posting, but remember the manga scene in episode 1, FLCL? One thing that Kamon said was (or close enough, anyways) "Ooh, former assistant editor-in-chief, I didn't know you had such a lovely young wife. Cooly cooly! Yeah, it's kind of a cooly cooly dream thing!" The "former assistant editor-in-chief" could have been his boss when he worked as a journalist, and he could have stole his wife from him (which could explain why he doesn't work there anymore). Anyone think that's how he could have got married?

She could have died during child birth. Or was offed because isnt there a limit on how many kids you can have in japan.

i'm pretty sure it's just china that has the limit on kids...the way naota acts it's like his mom has left just recently...

I never thought about what happened to his mother. It's kind of irritating the way shows have a missing parent they don't bother to explain.

Japanese people can definately have more than 1 kid. I agree that Naota might not be taking to girls b/c of his lack of mom. He's also really sullen. I'm glad he finally gets some cajones.

It's "cojones". You're practically saying he has "drawers" (as in boxes).

I dont think the psychology play that "he rejects women because he doesnt have a mom" applies here. He's, well, 11(right?) and usually at that age they are just beginning to accept women. Plus, as stated before, he might have realized that Mamimi was just playing with him.

I love this show. I really do. I even have the DVD. But don't you think were going a little TOO in depth here? lol i mean come on its a cartoon. Whether theres a mom in it or not makes no difference its still good without a mom right?

Naota's mom was mentioned in the FLCL novels (actual books, not manga), so she does exist. In there it says she was Grampa Shigekuni's only daughter, she left Mabase but returned after she married Kamon to raise her kids there, but she disappeared again when Naota was little and was never seen again. Kamon was really devastated, but her vanishing caused him to start taking his job as a dad and running the bakery more seriously.

What's interesting about all this is that Kamon took on his wife's family name when he married her, which is really uncommon in Japan and even considered unmanly. Gendou Ikari did the same thing in Evangelion, adopting his wife Yui's family name as his own instead of the other way around.
